Tectonic Plates Make Apocalyptic Sound

Noise of Earth & Sky Signal End of the World?

By Sarah Teter January 21st, 2012 - 10:35 pm PT

In the last week, Videos reporting strange sounds coming from the sky and earth have been posted online from people all over the globe - Canada, Costa Rica, Peru, Denmark etc. Many of those who have filmed the event believe it to be a sign this year will be the end of the world.

The sound resembles thunder or an echoing metal door hinging open, both more likely to be featured in a horror movie than a meteorological report. Doubters are making their own fake videos complete with movie soundtracks laid over basic footage and playing upon the fears of believers in the coming apocalypse. The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, the day many believers will be our last. This day has been referred to as judgement day, Armageddon, and the quickening.

Scientists Say Sound is Shifting Tectonic Plates

Scientists, however, say these sounds are caused by shifts in the earth's plates, tectonic movement underneath us. The time of the sound was compared to tectonic measurement scales and in some cases no movement was actually recorded at the time the strange sound was heard.

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program is continuing to monitor changes in the earth's plates. For now, they believe the tectonic shifts are due to magma moving in the magnetosphere. The increasing frequency of this noise could be blamed on global warming and gravitational changes in our solar system, which are moving the tectonic plates in new ways.

The earth has always made these noises, but either they are now louder or people are more vigilant for clues to support the apocalyptic theories. A recording of such a sound compares to the viral YouTube videos offering a plausible explanation.
