I've been writing since I could hold a crayon to paper. Seriously. I've always written. When I was in high school my bedroom walls were lined with prose and poems that I secretly wanted my parents to read... and desperately hoped that they wouldn't. I've just always written. But in March of 2006, I started writing consistently when I started blogging. I've written nearly every day - at least five days a week - for over a year now. I must be doing something right, because I've been nominated for the Bloggers Choice Awards in two categories: Hottest Mommy Blogger and the Blogitzer.
Why do I blog? I think if I could answer this question, my husband and I would get along better. The truth is, there are millions of reasons that bloggers blog. I started because I had seen other blogs, other writers, and I was driven by the compulsion of being able to do "that, only better."
I continued to blog because the feedback was, and is, addictive. To put your thoughts out into the world and have people - even strangers - lap it up... it's a rush. It's like performing on a stage, without the diet restrictions. And ever since I can remember, I wanted to be famous. I wanted people to know me - to know of me. The blogosphere is a tiny little way for me to live that dream on a daily basis. I don't think that's why most people blog. Most people care more about human connections than notoriety.
In a way, blogging provides a sense of self because you get constant feedback. But my blog is a very skewed lens because only people who LIKE me hang out there. People who think you are annoying and shallow and bitchy don't show up to read you day after day. If they did, I would be OK with that - but they don't.
I think you have to keep that in perspective - that, for the most part, you're only hearing from the "fans" and perhaps the "haters" would have a few valid points if they bothered to stop by... but everyone needs a little fan mail in their life from time to time.
Blogging is one of the few things in my life that is all about me. All me. All the time. It's indulgent in a life that can be severely lacking of indulgences.
The most gratifying thing about a blog is having a complete stranger, or even someone who has read you for a while, comment on the WRITING of a post. Not the fact that it was funny. Or that "we've all been there," but to actually say - wow, you did an excellent writing job there. I was told once a post was "inspired." That's a highlight when that happens.
It's mainly other bloggers that read my blog and a few people that I know offline read my blog. We're like our own little self-contained community. I've been fortunate in that 95% of my community gives me positive feedback, bordering on hero worship. I am adored online. :-)
I designed a lot of versions of my blog. Also, my beloved Amy of www.amysmusings.com has contributed much of her graphical genius to the cause. But the most important aspect of a blog is not design; it's the content. A blog is absolutely nothing without content. Some people can write and you want to read what they have to say. Some people can't. Period. It's just like in "real life" - some people are interesting to be around. Some people...meh.
My topics are very random. It's a cross between an online diary and a reality show, designed specifically to entertain. Sometimes I write about what moves me, what inspires me. Other times I write about something simply because when it happened I thought "holy sh*t, this will make a funny post."
Blogs can make the world a better place. The world needs more love. No, wait. That's not my blog. The world needs more balls. And I've got balls. My blog certainly makes my world a better place. If someone took my blog away from me, I would have to contend with a trial because I would probably go completely insane. Because someone trying to take my blog away from me would be a pretty freaking controlling move and I would snap. Justifiably. Fortunately, I have been building my insanity plea for years.
So, after the trial, I would probably write a book and go on a talk show tour-and of course I'd party with Britney and Paris and tattoo the really important messages to my ass for all the paparazzi to see when I get out of the car. And then I would tell the children that the lesson here is to never give up and never let The Man hold you down.
My blog with balls has garnered me some recognition in the Blogosphere. I'm up for Hottest Mommy Blogger and The Blogitzer awards. If I win Hottest Mommy Blogger, I'm probably going to go ahead and buy that mini skirt. And accept that offer from Playboy Magazine. I mean, if they say it on the Internet it MUST be true, right?
If I win The Blogitzer I am going to sh*t my pants and secretly GLOW because I care way more about being considered a writer than being hot. But most people don't know that about me - which I'm ASSUMING is why all of my readers are voting for me as Hot, and completely overlooking the other category.
But mostly, it will mean that I'm loved. And isn't THAT why we blog in the first place?

Britt is one of my favorite bloggers, and not because she's hot. I didn't even know what she looked like before I fell in love with her writing and personality, which shines through wonderfully. And while she might not be quite as wonderful as I am, she's a close second.
