Guitar Hero High School Dropout

Student Ditches Class to be a Pro Video Gamer

By Mike Small August 20th, 2008 - 11:44 am PT

Blake Peebles, 16, achieved the dream of every adolescent boy when he convinced his parents to let him drop out of high school to become a professional video gamer. His game of choice? Guitar Hero. With pesky distractions like going to school out of the way, Blake spends his days rocking (virtually) and pursuing his dream of becoming the best Guitar Hero player alive.

Peebles is still doing home schooling to move at his own pace and I'm getting a better education. he attended a tournament and came in second. After that he started attending more tournaments, and won without losing a single song.

Training To Be A Pro-Gamer

He plays 8 to 12 hours a day to catch up to the best players. He alsol plays Halo or Super Smash Brothers. His favorite song is 'Through the Fire and Flames' (DragonForce), because it has a good combination of everything you need practice in one run.

World Class Guitar Hero

Peebles is in the top 25 in the world and is currently qualified to play in a World Cyber Games tournament for Guitar Hero in LA.Guitar Hero doesn't have big tournaments that like World Of Warcraft and Halo. Peebles made around $1000 this summer, but is receiving different offers from sponsors.

Peebles said he talked to a model on the radio who said she wouldn't mind dating professional gamers - as long as they put a roof over her head.

When I was a kid, ‘guitar hero’ was called ‘guitar lessons’ (and sometimes ‘air guitar’). And I always dreaded those, my teacher was a huge pr.ck. And my high school attendance record was so bad (I did end up having to go to 3 different schools in 5 years) it was like I dropped out – but I mainly would pursue intoxicants of some variety. Ah, the glory of a misspent youth. Proof I think that some kids don't need to be there - this is an indictment of the schools, not the students.
