Commissioner Roger Goodell will reinstate quarterback Michael Vick in the third week of the upcoming NFL Season. The decision comes before the Saturday deadline for NFL teams to trim their roster to 53 players.
When asked why Vick wasn't reinstated for the opening game of the season, Goodell replied, "I do not want him to be put in a position where he's overwhelmed."
Goodell met with Vick on the morning of September 3rd along with Head Coach Andy Reid. He also discussed Vick's reinstatement at length with former Indianapolis Colt's coach Tony Dungy, who is serving as the newly-signed Eagle's mentor.
Goodell reiterated, "Ultimately it was my decision" and says that Vick understood the ruling. Goodell also said that his ultimate concern is for Vick himself and hopes that he will take these life lessons to heart.
Vick has not played a regular season game since New Year's Eve in 2006, ironically, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick played 6 snaps in the third pre-season game in the victory over the Jaguars. Vick is also expected to get game action in the final pre-season game against the Jets.
It is still uncertain just how the Eagles plan to use the versatile Vick; he has been a wide receiver as well as a quarterback. The Chiefs travel to Philadelphia in week 3 when Vick will make his regular season debut. He is expected to get another standing ovation as he did in pre-season action.
