There has been discussion of shorting the pre-season and extending the regular NFL season, but with a full slate of NFL pre-season games today and tomorrow, most teams will be keeping their starting players for the upcoming regular season rather than risk injury before it counts.
However, the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns still have some key position battles to be fought and won. Here are the top 2 position battles still undecided:
When the Detroit Lions travel to New Orleans in the first week of the regular season, they will have to shake their 0-16 season from a year ago and get started on a more positive note.
Who will be the starting quarterback for the game? Stafford will look to join fellow rookie Mark Sanchez as starter for his new pro team while Culpepper looks to prove he still has what it takes to win football games.
This competition looks like it might land in Stafford's lap as Culpepper suffered a cut on the bottom of his foot by his middle toes, which ultimately could affect his performance tonight in the pre-season finale versus the Buffalo Bills.
"There is no pushing down the stairs or whatever. I promise," said Stafford when asked if he pulled a Tonya Harding on Culpepper. The winner here may not be known until the season opener given that Coach Jim Schwartz likes the idea of the New Orleans Saints having to prepare for two quarterbacks. Predicted winner - Stafford
Brady Quinn vs. Derek Anderson
Anderson is only two seasons removed from being a pro bowler and Quinn is a former first-round selection, however, neither has really become the clear favorite to win the job as the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback.
When asked about playing quarterback for the Browns, Quinn said,"I am trying to go out and score touchdowns every time I'm out there. I don't want to call myself greedy, but you always want more."
Quinn can go a long way to earning the starting role if he can score touchdowns tonight against a solid Chicago Bears' defense. Anderson has been more consistent in practice, but has yet to earn the spot for Coach Eric Mangini's team.
Coach Mangini insists that there is no timetable for the decision. This could be an effective strategy because it forces the Minnesota Vikings, the Browns' week one opponent, to prepare for both quarterbacks. Predicted winner - Quinn
