Derek Jeter is one of the finest players in baseball today. Batting .331 this season, he is leading the New York Yankees to the post-season. He is also breaking records. Jeter recorded his 2,722nd hit recently, and has now passed passed Lou Gehrig for the most hits in Yankees history.

Gehrig had 2,721 hits in 2,164 games, Babe Ruth had 2,518 hits in 2,084 games and Mickey Mantle had 2,415 hits in 2,401 games.

Jeter Writing New Yankee History

Jeter has cemented his place in Yankees' history and he's done it in style.. Although no Yankees player has ever had 3,000 hits, it is possible that Jeter will do just that. If he can stay healthy for a few more seasons, the sky is the limit. He leads the team with 2,723 hits and he ranks second with 300 stolen bases, as well as a .317 career batting average.

It's been a thrill for Yankees fans to watch him and follow his career from his first award (the A.L.ROY) to his All-Star Game MVP, World Series MVP and every single one of his stolen bases, hits, flips and dives.

Jeter the Ultimate Yankee

How can you sum up Derek Jeter? He says he wants to wear the Yankees jersey forever. Rumor has it that he wanted to be a Yankee ever since he was 5.

He has handled his success with dignity and grace and has been a wonderful role model for children. From day 1 he has made a fantastic contribution to the Yankees team. He manages to do everything with mindfulness and purpose. Just as he tipped his hat to the fans when he broke Gehrig's record, he quickly focused on the road ahead of him and his team.

"We haven't finished anything yet, so our focus has always remained to try to win games and win the division," says Jeter. "That's what everyone's looking forward to. I enjoyed it, but it's time for everyone here to make our focus winning games," A true team player, he never makes it about himself.
