Day 17: August 16th, 2008: Today started at 5:30 a.m. and ended now at 11 p.m. My race went off at 9:35 a.m. and lasted eight mintues and thirty-six seconds. Not a great race.

I finished tenth in my heat and did not advance to the finals. I was very disappointed in my time, my place, and my overall performance. I feel that my preparation and hard work really didn't pay off with the outcome of the race. I still feel that I am in sub-8:20 shape and should be able to contend for a Top 8 finish at the Olympic Games, but that will have to come in 2012.

The race started off like normal; Anthony Famiglietti took it out hard and finished very strong in third place and qualified for the final. I got out great and two laps later, my legs felt tired and flat, I really couldn't switch gears and lost contact with the chase pack and ran the last three laps just holding on. After the race, I had an hour of somewhat alone time because I was picked for random drug testing, so I got to talk to myself and go over the race in my mind.

I still had mixed emotions on the race and my time here, feeling that I let myself, my family, and my supporters down, but then also feeling great because I am at the Olympics and at my first world championship in track and field. I am 23 and at the Olympics. I achieved my dream at an earlier age than I expected.

It was a day of ups and downs, but I'm still feeling some sort of a loss on the day. After the drug testing I went to cool down an easy 10 minutes, wishing things could have been different in preparing for the race today.

We got to the track way too early for a 9:35 a.m.

We're Proud of You

By J-B n.W.t, August 18, 2008 at 10:17

Brother, no matter how things turned out this time around, you've got no reason to hang your head. We're as proud of you now as we've ever been -- victory nor defeat change that. We've all heard the sayings that we tend to learn more from our failures than we do from our successes, so more than anything this is a stepping stone. I don't even feel comfortable calling it a failure, because in my eyes it's not. Someday's you've got 8:15 legs, others you've got 8:30's. Sometimes life serves lemonade, other days it just serves lemons. You know how to roll with the punches and believe me, the lemons served today will become tomorrow's lemonade for you bub.

MJ has been quoted as saying the following: "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

You're a success no matter what. You've got a loving fiance, a beautiful daughter, great family, and friends who all are proud of you for who you are, not just what you've accomplished on the track. So yea, "Keep Ya Head Up".

Billy,

You are so right with your comment about an event that you do not win. Every day you will grow stronger and every race in the next four years will prepare you for 2012 whether you win them or not. Athletes like you, with a heart as big as yours, are very rare. Also rare is the opportunity to go to the Olympics at 23, and then again at 27. We can't wait to see you there again, but by 2012, I am sure you will be there not only to compete but to defend a world record. You have a great future ahead of you. Good luck in your future races, you have made your hometown very proud!

God Bless,

Rachel Murphy-Dayton

Hey Billy - I know how disappointed you must have felt. You're a competitor, and winning is what motivates you, but I think your coach was right. Pressure makes diamonds, and maybe you needed to be disappointed to thrust you into the next stratosphere.

You should absolutely be proud of what you've accomplished. I've enjoyed hearing about your journey and can tell you're a wonderful person. You deserve the best, so keep chasing it!
