With lavish weddings, sun-kissed holidays and endless rounds of golf now just a distant memory, Premier League players have returned to their clubs to stroll through some friendly matches against lower league clubs or foreign minnows. It's the time to show off new players and new kits, and the first chance for fans to build-up crazy expectations for the new season...

Lokomotiv Moscow 1 Chelsea 1 (Moscow win 5-4 on penalties)
Andriy Shevchenko missed the decisive penalty as Chelsea lost for the first time on their pre-season travels. Michael Essien fired Luiz Felipe Scolari's side ahead with a stunning strike from the edge of the area 26 minutes in, and it seemed that would be enough to hand the visitors a slender victory as they dominated much of the game. However, they couldn't make their possession count and Ruslan Kambolov hit in from a free-kick six minutes from time to force the tie into penalties. Petr Cech saved the hosts's first kick, but Wayne Bridge and Shevenko missed Chelsea's final two to inflict a second Moscow shoot-out defeat on the unlucky Blues.

Next game: AC Milan (A) Sunday 3rd August

Manchester United 1 Espanyol 0
Manchester United celebrated the career of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 1-0 win over Spanish side Espanyol at Old Trafford. The 35-year-old played 25 minutes of this testimonial, and looked sharp, despite retiring in August last year. Espanyol gave United a fierce test in what was an entertaining encounter, but they couldn't carve out a goal and the hosts' impressive pre-season record continued thanks to Frazier Campbell's neat 82nd minute chip.

Next game: Peterborough United (A) Monday 4th August

Arsenal 0 Juventus 1
Arsenal lost at the Emirates Stadium for only the second time as they were beaten by Juventus in the Emirates Cup. A side which blended youth with experience put in a strong performance and came close through Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Adebayor. However, David Trezeguet's 38th minute goal proved the difference between the two teams, despite the Frenchman appearing to be offside when played in by Vicenzo Iaquinta.
