Armed with nothing but my old school tape recorder, a camera phone and my girlish jitters, I plunked myself down in the first row of chairs set up for the media at Vancouver’s Pan Pacific Hotel. Who was my stomach doing flips for? Why, David Beckham, of course! In town to play a friendly against our very own Vancouver Whitecaps, Becks took some time to sit down for a brief Q&A with local media. It is likely going to be the only access the media will have during his stay. We had been asked several times before he appeared to keep our questions geared towards the upcoming exhibition game - in other words, questions about Posh and their little Beck-lets were off limits. Here’s what Beckham had to say to the media about his passions on and off the pitch.

What are your first impressions of MLS?

It’s is a league that has got so much potential and that’s why I was committed to coming to the U.S. and playing in the MLS. You know, I’m very passionate about the game – everybody knows that – and I’m passionate about taking things to other levels. I’ve been lucky enough to be on teams in my career that have won different trophies in many different fields, so it’s something that I’m very passionate about – playing here, playing for the Galaxy and just enjoying my time. But the most important thing for me is the soccer.

How does soccer in North America compare to soccer in Europe and abroad?

I think everybody knows that it’s not at the level it is in Europe, but that’s what we want to achieve. We want to achieve the levels of the Manchester United’s, the Real Madrid’s, the Arsenal’s, the Chelsea’s – you know, all these great teams in the world. That’s definitely possible, because I’ve seen some of the talent that’s in the MLS and I’ve seen some of the games I’ve played in and how difficult they’ve been. So there is definitely potential there. That’s why it interested me so much to come over to the MLS and to play here.

You’ve played in World Cup Games and finals – how different is it to play in an exhibition game where you’ve got nothing on the line but a lot of people who have paid to see you play?

I’ve been lucky enough in my career to play in World Cups and play in some of the biggest games in world football, and exhibition games are part of that.

Thanks Michelle. Yes, I did see him play here. The game itself was quite boring but you're right - you always knew when Beckham touched the ball because the stadium went crazy! Even though the game was a let down, seeing him on the pitch wasn't.

I have to say, I was surprised to hear him talk about his relationship with the media and his commitment to use his celeb status to help others, especially kids. As if I needed another reason to love him ... :)

Je suis jaloux. LOL.

Well, first emotion...Becks has now graduated to a sports god in my book, alongside Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr and Evgeni Malkin in my book.

Second emotion...I am just in awe with how inspiring his life is. He works hard and he gives so much back and realizes how important fame is and using it to give back to those who made him famous...THE PEOPLE. It's a lot like what Bono does with his fame. Use your fame for the betterment of society.

Third emotion...I am just balling reading about his experience at the hospital.

I hope you at least got to see Becks in action while he was there. It was definitely a memorable experience. I was at that game in NY he was talking about! As my friend said that day, "He just touches the ball and everyone goes crazy."

I <3 BECKHAM!

OK, so when I bumped into you yesterday you were off to see BECK's UP CLOSE!! did i get a heads up on this tidbit of info??? Nope......
I would have hidden in your bag,
Carried your camera and said I was your assistant!!
Anything..... *sigh* oh well....
Well, like any proud soccer Mom my guys are off to see him tonight, (would have been nice to see him up close thought) LOL
He is definitely in the later stages of his career, but seriously it's Beck's who going to complain watching him at any time!
His charity work is much more than I think we are aware of and seems a strange pairing with what some could argue is supposedly one of the more materialistic, vain, shallow, people around Ms. Posh Spice herself! Their little kiddos are incredibly cute as well.

He definitely has a presence, even though he's in the late stages of his soccer career - i really admire his humility and down-to-earth attitude, particularly his charitable work, and how he doesn't "advertise" it, really special.

Luck you Robyn!

Robyn wasn't quite herself today after her run-in with Becks...I dare say she was swooning and riding the waves of adrenalin. I guess it's one of the perks of our job that we get to encounter so many interesting folks.
