Prof. Stephen Kent of the University of Alberta's Sociology Department is one of the few brave academics willing to face up to mind control cults of the Scientology ilk, and to study and expose the damage they do the people they control.
He spent 20-years within the cult's fanatical, militant and secretive inner circle, an organization run on paramilitary lines that uses both physical and tortuous mental restraint to control its people.
It runs its own prison, or "re-education" camps, which are, in theory, not that different from the Cambodian Khmer Rouge system described graphically in David Putnam's 1982 film The Killing Fields.
The Scientology version is described as the RPF - Rehabilitation Project Force - and one can be assigned to this at the whim of L. Ron Hubbard's personal staff, or by an internal kangaroo court called a Committee of Evidence.
Melton describes the RPF as a happy 'boy-scouts camping' adventure with a dose of Trappist meditative theory thrown in for good measure. Two weeks before Melton's '"free access" interview with the RPF, a select number of prisoners were moved to another location, treated like kings, fed, briefed, drilled, given little or no work details and sleep. Sleep is normally rationed as deprivation breask the spirit of the prisoner.
Melton got a very good impression via the Office of Special Affairs, L. Ron Hubbard Personal Public Relations office. A 20-year-old woman I know spent three years in the Sea Organization, brought up in the cult from childhood; highly conversant with Hubbard's counseling techniques and working as a public relations officer for a front line operation.
She had slept with her fiance, but in the sexually-repressive cult, she was sent to the RPF in the US while her fiance was sent to one another continent. The woman wanted to leave as a result, but one is not allowed to simply leave Scientology. One must be interrogated and sign of a number of non-disclosure bonds, all while under house arrest or other kinds of physical restraint.
Twelve months later, after being subjected to a course of intensive interrogations, re-indoctrination, sleep deprivation, filthy, heavy and demeaning work details and snubbed by former comrades on a daily basis, she killed herself.
She ran out of the RPF indoctrination room, went to the workshop, found a tin of paint thinner, swallowed it and then climbed on top of the gym roof, a 15-foot high structure surrounded by concrete, and jumped.
She lived, but is crippled for life and her lower intestine was ruined - she had to have colostomy. Psychologically, she is destroyed. Office of Special Affairs instructed all concerned to say that she had fallen down the steps so that there would be no health and safety inquiry. She was sent home, an invalid for life - in Scientology and Sea Organization speak, a Degraded Being - to be cared for by her mom, a Scientologist.
There was no follow up by the authorities and Gordon Melton's rosy description of the RPF is still used internationally, both in published Church PR booklets and on the Internet. Tom Cruise's YouTube wild-eyed fanatical rant is not a weird misrepresentation of the Scientologist; it is, in fact, the ideal.
He, like others who share his view, consider the woman who attempted suicide an obstacle to an Earth utterly controlled by The Church of Scientology. They dispense with her without pity, 'for the greater good' of mankind.

What a surprise to read about you, John.
Remember the 17 year old German girl who involuntarily paid for your journey to the U.S.A 20 years ago, who shared your life in Heimerdingen and Leonberg, who was never told a word about your plans but came back from school one day and realised, that her beloved partner was missing? Have you ever thought about what you did to those you left behind when you joined Scientology?
It´s good to hear that you are back on your feet and I wish you all the best for your new life, but I hope you don´t forget those who were made victims by you.
Slean agus beannacht (hope I spelled it right)

There will be a day when Tom Cruise will become disillusioned with Scientology, like so many once dedicated Scientologists have . When this happens, he will either hide and remain silent and be embarrassed about his involvement or become vocal and angry about the organization. About the people involved in it especially the RPF and want to get out but do not know where to turn. I am sure there are ex-scientologists out there that would be willing to help redirect these people into a sane opposite direction. For them it may take that little stream of light filtering down into the cavern, then them seeing the escape route, it is well worth it to make a run for it. No looking back!

Did you know my book on the subject is now available at Amazon.com?
Thanks for the comment...

Let me see, in the RPF they work long long hours, to exhaustion. Get very little sleep. Get very little nutritious food. Are belittled and badgered. Are surrounded by the propaganda of scientology 24/7. Are kept from outside influences. This is brainwashing! I remember seeing a brainwash manual (by scientology, it had the scientology cover) years ago sitting on the shelf in a Scientology bookstore. I guess Hubbard used this method. Notice I do not call it a Church to do would be blasphemy.
