John Berge specializes in Self-Help
John brings 20 years of experience working with incarcerated youth in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation; Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). John developed an institutional gang intervention model for the DJJ, teaching the program for 12 years at the Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional facility in Chino, California. John brought his experience to the California Community College environment as a professor in the Administration of Justice programs at Mount San Antonio College for seventeen years and at Chaffey Community College for 6 years. John was instrumental in the development of curriculum, which served to sensitize potential Correctional Workers and community Law Enforcement Officers to the vagaries of Youth Gangs and Crime. John has served as a consultant to Los Angeles, San Bernardino Superior Courts as well as the Federal Court System in Los Angeles County – Providing expert testimony in gang related capital cases. John has written extensively for major publications and various media regarding the issues of gangs and juvenile crime in California. He has done countless presentations and workshops for various groups and associations including; California Correctional Peace Officers Association, Correctional Education Association, American Corrections Association, and Kaiser Permanente Mental Health Association. He has also consulted for communities including; City of Memphis, TN, Portland, OR, Jurupa, California, and Quebec, Canada. John has been a consultant for YouthBuild USA and the Criminal Justice Advocacy outreach with the California YouthBuild Coalition. He has been instrumental in the development of a successful grant opportunity with DJJ as a means to assist Parolees who are transitioning back to their communities upon release. John currently assists the California Conservation Corps as an educator, ensuring that young people in our charge receive a quality education component through our partnership with John Muir Charter School.
