In theory the trial was great working on the T cells in the body to combat the virus but we have always known and been told that AIDS is the incurable disease. Miracles do occur in medicine but the way the AIDS virus is "created" is specifically designed to have no cure for any of it's victims. The disease can be slowed, temporarily halted, in fact, but it cannot be cured.
AIDS is the destruction of the immune system, that same immune system is the only defense mechanism of the body against such virus loads. Hence the perfect virus. The spread can be contained - unlike Ebola which is droplet spread, AIDS spreads person-to-person through blood product contact only. So in theory, any decent good moralistic Christian has no chance of contracting the disease, even less so if you are Jehovah Witness because they don't allow blood product transfusion in any way. Purity of blood, the new Aryan race.
But to the poor, the sad, the sick, the social outcasts and the uneducated, AIDS is rife, spreading at a rapid rate throughout the world in these social subsets. The drugs culture, gay lifestyle, swinging and free sex in the new nightclub world where anything goes and in third world countries it is spreading faster than life is being created.
Once a disease of the poor and uneducated, the new sexual liberation and social acceptance of homosexuality and the new "free love" theme has out paced and effectively silenced the "safe sex" message of the '90s.
Twenty years ago, condoms were a hindrance and low sell item. Ten years ago, there was every type of condom imaginable to man and then some - one wouldn't be caught dead having sex without one. And then there is today, with bareback sex making a comeback with a vengeance. For the young and young at heart of today's times, casual sex is not "something different," it is a right of passage. A new term has sprung up to coin this: "F*ck buddies." A perfectly acceptable course of action if you are horny is to call a casual acquaintance and "bonk" their brains out, then returning back to the casual acquaintanceship without a backward glance.
Morals and consequences are not part of the equation with so many forms of birth control available on the market today and along with after the fact fixes, unwanted additions and side affects are no longer an issue. So it is green light and go, go, go and young western society is certainly not hanging around in fear, instead choosing the rush right in and "do it" mentality. It brings to mind a modern sports advertising campaign aimed at the teens and post teens, "Just Do It". AIDS is catching up to this new found sexual freedom and the burning of the condoms.
More and more heterosexuals who have never tried drugs or had blood products are testing positive to the disease. More and more people who are already positive are hiding that fact and spreading the disease further and more ignorant people are being lax and also contracting and spreading the disease.
We read about social groups who purposefully attend bareback parties, just to risk actually contracting the disease for whatever morally sickened reasons. And it goes on: Day by day, the statistics creep onwards on the insidious grim reaper march of death without the massive advertising and "safe sex" messages of the '90s, without the constant media reminders that to have sex without protection is to invite the reaper into your bed.
Today, that message is just not out there but yet it stands true for today even more so than the '90s. With statistics showing so many million more AIDS victims now than back then, it does stand to reason that the spread also multiplies and much more rapidly, like a snowball rolling down a hill that turns into an avalanche, ripping and tearing and destroying anything in it's path that was not quick enough or smart enough to get out of its way. People feel protected, they reason that it won't happen to them - it only happens to the "bad ones" and without that constant media reinforcement message, they succumb easily and wantonly to that lust and freedom, with condom or without.
The drug culture has also grown, although in this area it is increasingly popular to smoke or snort as opposed to slamming a grotty needle into your arm. Most western cultures that do have drug problems of a needle basis have needle exchange programs for the addicts to at least keep clean. Many people detract from these programs as in some countries, diabetics still have to pay for syringes where junkies get them free, but the damage of not having a freely available needle exchange program in a drug area is devastating with viruses like AIDS and Hepatitis C as popular as beer and coffee.
So with this new found attitude and liberation and the "burning of the condom" noughties, the spread of AIDS should come as no surprise - but yet it does? In this new found world of modern medicine and cures, hopes were pinned on this cure and in many quarters people just accepted that this was the cure and that was it. Yet they have been told this is the "disease without cure" why did they expect any different? Will this be the wake-up call the world needs and call the attention of the real facts and deadly dangers today of the world? While we are busy worrying what Britney will do next to blow our minds, the AIDS crisis is reaching festering point, the second wave is riding in...
