I envision a product that would fit these general parameters: "automated" deployment, failsafe, elegant and simple in design, more reliable than TASERs (has no electrical parts), can be used in a wide variety of temperatures, lower cost per unit than TASERs, no special storage or safe handling techniques involved, much better than PR received from human force, billy clubs, TASERs and firearms.....
I have a device on paper that can be assembled inexpensively, can cover a 10 x 10 foot square area, is compact and will weigh less than a side arm, perhaps slightly more than a TASER, can be worn on a service belt, can be easily and quickly deployed without intricate training, first aid will seldom be required-if ever, the design can be increased in size for larger crowd control applications.
I'd like to work with the RCMP to develop it to meet all their requirements and have this become a Canadian project for the good of humanity and lead the field like the Arrow did meeting our military's requirements at the time. I approached the RCMP when I thought of this idea spurred on by a comment from a lady in the dog park. She mentioned the idea of a large animal capture net.
Do you think my ideas will get a chance to help make a difference?
Not bloody likely...
"Riding the Lightning" is exactly why cops love to TASER. That is the primary reason why the HID-Human Immobilization Device will not be their first choice. The cops will have objections by the dozen of why they "need" to TASER, but all will boil down to one thing: Applying direct control in the form of painfully immobilizing incapacitation-control in their eyes.
The reason they see the TASER as their "only" option is because it falls in line with their historical/ operational perspective. It has always been about applying force to the suspect to control them. By strong arm, by billy club, by weapon have the police controlled the situation.
The TASER was deemed a non lethal weapon, that's not living up to its advertising. Rather than explore a capture tool, they will fight tooth and nail to keep their weapons.
