Each year in British Columbia, Canada six people are honored by a prestigious award for their courage to overcome and recover from serious illness, injury or adversity. Orato.com is lucky to count one of this year's recipients among our correspondents.May 8 Orato.com correspondent Trisha Baptie [1] receives the Courage to Come Back Award [2] for overcoming social adversity. Trisha was one of Orato.com's Robert Pickton serial killer trial [3] citizen correspondents last year. The remains of at least 26 women, most survival-sex prostitutes with drug addictions, were found on Pickton's pig farm. In the first trial, Pickton was found guilty on six counts of second degree murder, but he is implicated in the deaths of as many as 50 of the more than 60 women who disappeared from Vancouver, Canada.Trisha once worked alongside some of the missing women and counted some of Pickton's victims among her friends. Now, she wins the Courage To Come Back Award for her bravery in overcoming the cycle of abuse and addiction and for giving the murdered women of Vancouver, Canada's Downtown Eastside a voice.Last night British Columbia's Coast Mental Health Foundation hosted a dessert reception so that this year's recipients could thank all those loved ones who could not make tonight's gala.I was Trisha's editor during the year-long trial, and I am proud to be able to count her among my friends.
