Preamble:

Guys everywhere will be able to relate to the plight of poor Peter Bretter. Busy at work as a musical score specialist this hands on guy is the nicest chap imaginable. Madly in love with television star Sarah Marshall you can almost sense the potential for disaster. Just how long a hot babe could find happiness with an “average” looking working stiff is the question of the day. Smart people will tell almost immediately that paradise could well be lost.

Body:

Break-ups are hard to do but finally the crunch comes and our L.A. couple decides to go their separate ways. Peter takes the break-up particularly hard. To weather the storm he heads for a little r and r in Hawaii. Imagine his shock when also vacationing at the trendy resort is his former flame. Worse yet, she’s hooked up with a hot shot rocker named Aldous Snow.
Old lovers will know the feeling as these two first try to avoid one another and then come into contact face to face in sometimes riotous fashion. Out to make their stay all the more memorable is a fan worshipping waiter and a sexy hotel clerk who wreck further havoc on these former lovers.
Mild laughs and good scenery make Forgetting Sarah Marshall funny at times but nowhere near the hilarity of such classics as Knocked Up or Superbad. Here the laughs are tame with Jason Segel (Knocked Up) especially likeable as a sad sack loser just not willing to let go of a former flame. There to spice up a loveless life is Mila Kunis (Get Over It) as a comely receptionist and Kristen Bell (Deep Water) as the forever fetching Sarah. Rounding out the cast is Russell Brand (Penelope) who steals the show as a carefree British rocker with strong support from Bill Hader (Hot Rod) as an ace advice giver.
Even a nice emphasis on Hawaiian traditions can’t help make Forgetting Sarah Marshall only mildly entertaining and barely that memorable in the laugh arena.
