Preamble:

Who would pass up an all-access pass to the Great Pyramids of Giza with two leading authorities on the star patterns that governed the pyramids' construction? Certainly not Gary Baddeley, who recently took the trip of a lifetime to Egypt with ancient civilizations experts Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock to witness the sun rise over the Sphinx on the Spring Equinox. Here, Gary puts this unique experience into words.

Body:

From the time we’re little, we read about Egypt. All our lives we learn about these mythical structures that are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Finally, I was there and I had special access that is permitted to very, very few people.

Our Egyptian guide had been giving tours of the pyramids for 18 years and she had never been allowed into the inner enclosure around the Sphinx. Yet, there I was, literally between its paws, listening to Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock, two incredibly erudite men who have researched and written greatly on ancient civilizations, give their theory about the pyramids and the Sphinx.
It was an incredible, atmospheric moment, and one that very few other people are likely to repeat.

Robert Bauval And The Orion Correlation Theory

Robert Bauval has written three books with Graham Hancock about ancient civilizations, and another book with Adrian Gilbert, called the Orion Mystery which was published in 1993. Basically, he came up with the original theory that the three main pyramids of Giza were aligned to the constellation Orion; in fact, the two big pyramids are in line and then there’s one slightly off and that looks like exactly like Orion.

Back in 1993, his theory was very controversial and became known as the Orion Correlation Theory. Over the last 15 years or so, it’s gradually been more or less accepted by the establishment, although grudgingly, and I’m not sure they really want to give Robert credit for it.

Over the last 15 years, Robert’s spent a lot of time expanding his research and he now believes that all of the various pyramids and temples in lower and upper Egypt are one big star map that correspond to the stars above.

Destined To Be There

I first met Robert last year and he told me about an event he was organizing in Egypt called the Grand Gathering Of Souls, which would fall on the Spring Equinox on March 21. He said a select group of people would watch the sunrise over the Sphinx at dawn and would be allowed special access to stand right between the Sphinx’s paws and private time inside the Great Pyramid. I decided if there was ever a year that I was going to go, this had to be it.

On that pre-dawn morning of March 21, we were all in front of the Sphinx and Robert said, “We’re going to do an exercise. I want all of the people born in December to stand over there, and all the people born in January to stand over there…” and so forth.

We ended up with a semi-circle of people standing in groups depending on what month they were born. Then he explained how the sun rose facing the Sphinx depending on which month it was, literally illustrating the alignment that was very carefully planned by ancient Egyptians.

Inside the pyramids, he showed us the exact alignments of the air shafts and which stars they align with. It’s much different when you’re seeing it yourself because you know that he’s not making it up; you can see the evidence. It’s not theory anymore – it becomes practice.

And Then The Lights Went Out…

As you climb the incline of the Grand Gallery inside the Great Pyramid, you're struck by the amazing architectural feat; it boggles the mind how they were able to build this and it’s still not really understood how it was done.

There are lots of theories about how different parts of it were built, and some of them may be right, but no one can 100 per cent explain how they did every portion of it. How did they get the sarcophagus in the King’s chamber? It’s a single piece of granite and it’s too big to fit through the only opening in there…

But the closest thing to awe that I experienced was when the dim lights inside the pyramid went out, which they’re not supposed to do. We were in the Queen’s chamber at the time and all of a sudden we had a power cut.

Everyone started making a lot of noise and Robert and Graham told everyone to be quiet – you don’t get this very often and it was a real opportunity to experience what it would have been like at the time it was built. It’s believed that a lot of the initiations were carried out in the dark, as part of the rituals of the priests and pharaohs.

That moment, when it was dark and quiet and we really had time to sit and just meditate, was a magical experience. I would love to do it again – I know it sounds a little spooky but you really start to soak up the energy in there. I know I’m sounding really new-age, which is not really me, but if you were there, you’d understand.
