Preamble:

When he's not busy competing to see who can stay naked the longest or who can drink the most beer for his show 'Kenny vs Spenny', Spencer Rice spends his time immersed in porno. That's because he's been busy making his new film, 'Confessions Of A Porn Addict.'

Body:

My first experience with porn is exactly what’s in the movie - a book. I was visiting my grandparents and there was a guy living across the street who was a year or two older than me who gave me a dirty book. Then it went to magazines, then of course to videos, VHS tapes, then now of course DVDs.

It would be disingenuous of me to say the film is a complete fiction and I’ve never had anything to do with pornography. I’m certainly not an addict or doing it to the point that it would destroy my life like the character in the movie does, but I just think it’s a funny thing to put a romantic comedy in the world of porn. I liked that we sort of have this dysfunctional sweet love story set in the most unromantic of backdrops, which is of course hardcore pornography.

At the very beginning the idea was based on a film that probably never got released. The first couple of scenes were just this guy sitting at the table with his family, and he excuses himself from the table and goes to the bathroom. So he gets into the washroom and jumps on the phone and it turns out he’s hiding an unbelievable gambling addiction from them. I thought, ‘This is a great premise for a movie’.

I wanted to do a film about porn addiction because I think it is somewhat an issue in our culture, although this is not a polemic film in any way, shape, or form. But it is something people can relate to and have feelings about.

The idea was to put it in a romantic comedy and mock documentary context, which is just bizarre. I worked with Duncan Christie, who is the director, and we would have meetings and talk about story. We approached this with the ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ idea, working from a detailed outline. I just like the story. I think it’s dark, but it has sweet moments and I think it’s funny; that’s what I do.

We wrote the story and then came up with the concept of genre mixing, a reality and semi-scripted narrative film. We thought, 'Let’s see if we can get a real pornographer', except I knew NONE. I basically spoke to someone who knew someone who was a producer for HBO, who said they could get me in touch with this person who could get me in touch with Rob Black.

Rob black is a real guy; he’s playing himself - the real deal. He’s probably the most pernicious pornographer in the United States. Even Larry Flynt has said publicly that Rob Black takes things too far, and that’s what he does, it’s his brand. I’m really tickled to death he’s in the movie.

With Kenny vs Spenny I got to direct a little porn movie, and that was my first taste of being on set of a porn film. It was my set, so it wasn’t quite a normal one. But they were f*cking right in front of me and coming on command, so it was pretty unbelievable. Other than that my exposure to pornography isn’t that much different from any normal guy.

When I got to meet Rob for the first time, it was the first time I had ever been in a porn warehouse. It was the first time I’d ever rubbed elbows with these people and they were pretty nice by and large.

In the movie I wear a c*ck cage (*see video). I like to compensate for my lack of training in the acting profession by being real as much as I can. I didn’t wear it the whole time but I did wear it to get a sense of what it’d feel like, and it was uncomfortable.

I’m very happy that it turned out the way it did, and one of the few things I’m really happy about was working with Mark Breslin, who plays my sponsor. I’ve known him literally since I was a kid. He was running Yuk Yuk’s comedy club when I was 9 or 10 years old and my cousin Marjorie was a stand-up comic so I got to meet him. I’ve always stayed in touch with him and always admired him.

We also wanted to create a female character who liked pornography, who liked being dirty and liked watching it and wanted to participate in it. I think we did it really well, and we casted Lindsey Connell 'cause she sort of had an innocence about her. The innocent girl who gets defiled by rabbits or whatever.

I do have to say in a very rare moment of me not being humble, it has by far one of the most memorable endings to a movie that I can remember, and I do say that without an ounce of humility, because I think it’s so funny. It’s just so bizarre and we were worried it might be too much, maybe it is. But it was the high water mark for me in terms of creativity.

It’s ambitious in a way. Very low budget obviously. The wardrobe department was literally a duffel bag that I ended up shleping around all the time. It was not a fun movie to make; we shot the thing in 10 days, but I’m proud of it, I really like it.

I think Kenny vs. Spenny fans would like it. I think the university crowd would love this movie, but I don’t ever think about demographics. This could be for good or ill, I don’t know. What I’m trying to do, even with Kenny vs. Spenny, is to find a story in an episode or movie where I can clearly see a beginning, middle, and end. Once I have that, then it’s enough for me to really go to work and create something more.

I want to do different kinds of movies, I want to different kinds of everything. When Kenny vs. Spenny is over I want to write a novel. I know that Hollywood tends to pigeonhole you, and I won’t let myself be pigeonholed. I’m going to go where my muse takes me, and whatever I think is the best quality project I can come up with at the time.

I can pretty much guarantee it will all be comedy because that’s just what I love, and that’s where my heart lies. As long as people like it, I like it, and it’s good work, that’s all I really care about.

I’ve been doing this a long time...I’ve had some success, I’ve had things that weren’t successful. That’s OK, you know? I’m making good money, but mostly I’m doing what I love to do, which is fortunate.
