My take on this weekend's FA Cup and Premier League games........

Body:

SATURDAY

FA CUP QUARTER FINAL

Manchester United v Portsmouth (1245 GMT)

Of all the draws that Portsmouth could have got for the quarter-finals this is the worst.

Pompey aren't playing all that well at the moment, while Man Utd are going from game to game and dealing with each one successfully.

They were not really tested against Fulham last weekend in the Premier League and had a comfortable time against Lyon in the Champions League in midweek.

United are into early March and remain in the hunt for the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup - and they are strong contenders for all of them.

Verdict: 2-0

Barnsley v Chelsea (1730 GMT)

A lot has been made of Chelsea's defeat in the Carling Cup final.

Avram Grant's team did not play well and their shape was wrong.

However, they have bounced back with a bang and I don't see them slipping up at Oakwell.

I expect Barnsley to give them a better game than Olympiakos managed in the Champions League on Wednesday but even if Grant rotates his squad I still think Chelsea will be too strong for their Championship opponents.

Verdict: 0-2

PREMIER LEAGUE

Blackburn Rovers v Fulham

I am not quite sure where the points are going to come from that will lift Fulham out of trouble.

I think that the biggest problem facing manager Roy Hodgson has been moving his players away from the mindset that they are going to be relegated. I'm not sure he has managed it.

Fulham have been reliant on their home form - which has not been great of late - while the Cottagers have been abysmal on the road.

Rovers have had a couple of good wins recently and been scoring from all areas of the pitch.

Verdict: 2-0

Liverpool v Newcastle United

I think that Newcastle played well enough against Blackburn last week to have taken three points from the match.

It was the first time that the Magpies played anything like what you would expect with Kevin Keegan in charge - and that at least is something of a boost in terms of looking forward for Newcastle.

However, I think that Liverpool's luck has changed.

Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick against Middlesbrough a couple of weeks ago - but two of the goals were gifted by Boro mistakes.

Liverpool then went to Bolton last weekend and were handed a goal at a key time.

Manager Rafael Benitez has not rotated his team so much since the win over Inter Milan and it is no surprise that they have been winning games.

Verdict: 3-1

Reading v Manchester City

Reading manager Steve Coppell made changes to his team for the game at Middlesbrough and saw his team end their eight-game losing sequence in the Premier League.

I imagine that he will stick to the same team against Man City - and by allowing Leroy Lita to join Charlton on loan Coppell has sent a positive message that he is happy with the strikers who remain at the club.

Man City are not the same team without Micah Richards and with Martin Petrov still suspended the team lack a cutting edge.

Verdict: 1-0

SUNDAY

FA CUP QUARTER FINAL

Middlesbrough v Cardiff City (1400 GMT)

Middlesbrough have been live on the television three times in this season's FA Cup - once against Mansfield and twice against Sheffield United.

They also won 2-1 at Bristol City in the third round in January.

Each time they have eventually got across the line but they have not really ever been particularly convincing.

They have had a week off to prepare for the match against Cardiff - and with a place in the semi-finals at stake I cannot believe they will fall at this hurdle.

Cardiff boss Dave Jones, however, will believe that Boro are there for the taking.

He will tell his players to get into Boro early on. If they can keep it tight for the first 20 minutes or so then the groans might start in the stands.

Boro can be very inconsistent and this could be a tight game.

Verdict: 2-1

Bristol Rovers v West Bromwich Albion (1800 GMT)

I'm probably going to opt for a draw here, which is probably not what West Brom want in terms of their priority of winning promotion to the Premier League.

Yet even though reaching the top flight is the number one aim for the Midlands club you are not telling me that they do not want to play in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

The chairman and the board of directors will also want the revenue generated from reaching the last four.

Southampton completely failed to come to terms with the pitch at the Memorial Stadium in the last round and this could be a problem for the Baggies.

You have to play percentage football on the surface and West Brom boss Tony Mowbray will have to make sure his players dig in and scrap for everything.

Verdict: 1-1

PREMIER LEAGUE

Sunderland v Everton

This is a big game for Everton given that Liverpool beat West Ham on Wednesday to move into fourth place. David Moyes' team have been very good of late but Sunderland have improved over the last month or so.

Roy Keane's team have been a lot stronger mentally.

Their home form has been decent and it is the reason why they will avoid relegation.

Verdict: 1-1

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United

West Ham go into this game on the back off heavy defeats to Chelsea and Liverpool.

They should be pushing for a Uefa Cup place but their season is coming to a grinding halt.

This will be a tough fixture for the Hammers against a team who play attacking football.

Verdict: 2-1

Wigan Athletic v Arsenal

I thought that Arsenal's performance at AC Milan on Tuesday was the best performance by an English team in the Champions League since Manchester United's victory over Juventus in Turin in 1999.

Milan are a team who rarely lose at home and have fantastic experience throughout the team - but Arsenal's performance was an object lesson in how to play football in 2008.

Wigan are big and strong and can be a handful but Arsenal's win over Milan was a result from which they can kick on for the rest of the season and I expect them to leave the JJB Stadium with three points.

Verdict: 0-2
