The fact that my husband has to negotiate a plea bargain for selling marijuana seeds is very sad. He would be temporarily extradited to the US to plead guilty there. After he gets sentenced there, within 45 days he will have to be returned to Canada to start serving a 10-year sentence. Normally Canadians can get out after 20 months of a 10-year sentence because of automatic parole, but the US has insisted that Marc serve five years in custody.
It’s all really frustrating, but we just take each day at a time. We’re really busy; there’s a lot to keep us preoccupied. We’ve got the magazine, Cannabis Culture [1], and we start shipping today, so we’re supposed to get a lot of work done. There’s tons of media outside the store right now, and Marc’s doing interviews. It’s a crazy day.
Since Marc will be gone, I’ll have to learn everything I need to know to take over his position as publisher and editor in chief of the magazine. Hopefully he’ll remain here in Canada in minimum security prison, so I can be able to visit him. That’s the bright side of everything I guess.
Marc has always talked about the worse case scenario: serving a life sentence. He even said if he comes back in his next life as a frog, he’ll have to serve time as a frog. Obviously the alternative to a plea bargain would be absolutely terrifying. I know I would never hear from him or see him again. The United States isn’t to be trusted for prisons or anything. It would be extremely depressing.
Negotiating a plea bargain is the only option. In the last three years we’ve tried to find every argument possible to keep Marc out of prison, but nobody has ever won against being extradited. There’s just no other choice, especially so we can save Greg and Michelle, who are also facing hard time and are just collateral for bargaining with.
No matter what happens, there’s a lot of opposition and Marc’s supporters will protest. There’s been a huge response. We’ve got supporters both in the US and in Canada who hold rallies around the world. People will barricade the borders or lie in front of police vehicles. We’ll see what happens; it’s totally wide open.
Let’s remember that marijuana should be legalized, and what’s happening to Marc is unjust. The only reason marijuana use is associated with crimes is because it’s been deemed illegal. There are no victims here; Marc’s never hurt anybody. Marijuana use has never hurt anybody.
Keep Canadians in Canada! Call the Justice Minister, demand he refuse extradition!
