The summer of blockade over several land claims and other rights by native Indian activists in Ontario, Canada started with a bang on Friday, June 28th with passenger train service to eastern Ontario (Toronto-Montreal) suspended and police shutdown a stretch of busy highway for 12 hours on that day on the eve of the native day protest on Friday.

About 40 renegade Tyendinaga Mohawks were expected to dismantle their last blockades by midnight after a national day of action sponsored by the Assembly of First Nations. Having returned from the protest march by students around the greater Toronto city, with the support of Ontario Coalition against poverty in a otherwise peaceful demonstration in downtown Toronto amidst drumming, dancing and hoisting placards for the natives Mohawk, Arawaks, Meiteis, Pocahontas, Washitaw, Yamasee, Iroquois, Cherokee, Blackfoot, Pequot & Mohegan (and/or all Indigenous Native American), I urge upon all the aborigines and indegineous tribes of India (there were more than 550 different ethnic tribal groups in British India) to form solidarity and wage their battle for special rights, land claims and proper dignity from the Govt. to safeguard their interests from the ever increasing onslaught by the modern and educated urban population.

Readers should watch the film, 'Ab Aur Waqt Nahin'(meaning, No more time to lose now!) which portrays the growing self confidence among Tribals/Adivasis of Jharkhand and their indomitable spirit to fight exploitation at all levels - a process that began during Akbar's reign, heightened during the British rule and continues to this day due to large scale industrialization and other developmental projects, which has led to extensive environmental degradation, widespread industrial pollution and depletion of forest and water resources. Furthermore, it has unleashed corrupt commerce and politics, unbridled exploitation of the tribal communities and haphazard urbanization resulting in thousands been forced to give up their habitat with paltry compensation for displacement.

And now in response to the demands of the Gujjar community to treat them at par with their counterparts in other states and accord them the status of ST (Scheduled Tribe), the Rajasthan Govt.
