Ex-Sex Trade Worker VS. Active Sex Trade Worker: Showdown With Jamie Lee

Pauline VanKoll, former sex trade worker, Downtown Eastside, Vancouver

Who says because I'm no longer a sex trade worker that I can't have my say?

Doesn't it infuriate you when a person acts callously towards you and won't take the time to say what's on their minds? Instead, they'll talk about you behind your back? As a parent I've always told my kids that if they have a problem with someone it's better to go to that person directly. You don't have to approach the person with an aggressive attitude, but talk to them as a person. And when you can do that, you've grown up.

Jamie Lee Hamilton has been sending Orato messages about how 'ex'-sex trade workers shouldn't speak for 'active' sex trade workers. Humbug! What we have to say is called freedom of speech. Jamie Lee does it, so why can't we?

I've never have any reason to talk about Jamie Lee. Until now. One day she's an ex-sex trade worker, and the next day she's an active one, or so I've heard. I've read what Jamie Lee has to say and what others say about Jamie Lee.

I can say that there are a few things we agree on. Hamilton said,

"City Council has not kept its promise to reduce the effects of drug addiction in the Downtown Eastside...Overdose deaths are up, but council will tell you the safe injection site is working...All you have to do is take a walk and you can see the despair. Children are being preyed on and lives are still being ruined, I believe that Vancouver under the leadership of Senator Larry Campbell and his chief lieutenant Jim Green has fared poorly."

I agree that there needs to be more organizations to assist with drug addiction. I've said it once and I'll say it again, "if you're going to give people a safe injection site, you may as well give them a loaded gun." Same goes for giving free heroin. The drug addict doesn't need to be enabled they need to be guided or helped to live life on life's terms.

Vanouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, like any politician, doesn't understand drug addiction, so how can they make the decision sufficiently for this safe injection site and free heroin? Who knows better about drug addiction than a recovered addict?

You have some rather glaring errors in your information on the John Graham case. Anna Mae Pictou Aquash was murdered in the mid 1970's, not "... a little over a decade ago." (If you think that this discrepancy is 'not a big deal', try telling that to Leonard Peltier) Also, Leonard Peltier was extradited and convicted of the murders of FBI agents, not Anna Mae, as you incorrectly identify.
Further, you might want to look into a recent speaking engagement at UBC involving one Bob Robideau, and the assertions that he made at this lecture (unsubstantiated) that implicate John Graham in Anna's murder. Lastly, look at the situation of Arlo Looking Cloud, and the questionable testimony he gave in the US concerning the Graham case. There are a number of questionable figures involved in this matter, and not all of them are white, or agents of the US government. Just most of them.

Jamie Lee is suspect. She will just make stuff up about you. For example

If Jamie makes stuff up

If Jamie makes stuff up about me then that just shows her maturity and that's Jamie's problem then. In this business you take what you want and leave the rest, just like in life. Maybe she'll get her fur up, but she's only doing so because the truth hurts and she can't handle the truth then. I feel sorry for Jamie in that case. Thanks for your input.

Fantastic article. Keep up

Fantastic article. Keep up the good work.

As for Jamie Lee Hamilton, everyone seems to have a pretty good idea what she's about and thats why notable people do not do business with her.
Even playing the victim role has not worked for her, smart people see right through it all, even her blog is very one sided.
She likes to try and get her hand in everyone's cookie jar but when she is turned away, then she attempts things like blackmail in order to take a person or business down.
Thankfully no one takes her seriously enough to make the changes she demands to suit her 'needs'.

Great article Pauline. I

Excellent piece.

You've touched on a number of subjects I'm very interested in. I especially look forward to learning more about John Graham from the sources you suggest.

I am wary of pimps and madam's, and am uneasy about red light districts. I worry about creating pockets of DTES like communities by the creation of red light districts (as I currently conceive them.) I'd really like to learn more about red light district models that protect workers from being preyed on by johns pimps and pushers. I'm not impressed with the statistics and anecdotal information I've found regarding places like Amsterdam, and elsewhere.
I'd really be interested in learning more about the red light district model as conceived by those who support it. I am a supporter of brothels but when it comes right down to it, I don't fully understand the ins and outs of the business end, so again I'm left wondering about pimps and madams.
And I'm back at the drawing board.

Anyway, just wanted to say, I think you're doing a great job, and I am certainly learning a lot from you and Trisha Baptie, and Orato.

Thanks.
Hazel.
