Within the last five years, the subject of prostitution and the women who are employed in what is known as 'the world's oldest profession' have received more exposure than at any time in history. Unfortunately, it has been the tragic stories and the dangers that come with the job that has brought prostitution out of the darkness and finally shed some light on what little glamour actually exists for the women who work the streets.

Hollywood films and television shows haven't done 'working girls' any favors either. Many of the hookers on TV were often degraded with most of the roles played by women of color who have since broken the glass ceiling by winning Emmys and Oscars. On the other extreme end, some TV hookers lived in beautiful and expensive apartments with closets full of designer clothes and clients consisting of movie stars, millionaire athletes and jet setting business tycoons who treated their beautiful companions to every luxury they could imagine. If only life was actually like that, what a wonderful world it could be.

Perhaps one of the first realistic glimpses into the daily and nightly lives of the women who sell sex for profit was during the horrific murder spree that occured in London England's Whitechapel district, over 100 years ago. We are briefly aquainted with these these historic accounts today by the infamy of one man known as Jack the Ripper. It is interesting to note that had forensic science been as advanced back then as it is today in the 21st century, Jack the Ripper would have undoubtedly been identified and captured.

There are also forensic historians with New Scotland Yard who believe that the case of Jack the Ripper has been all but solved. However due the fact that all available witnesses to Jack the Ripper's crimes in addition to the detectives who first investigated and documented the evidence have been dead for years, proving those theories as to the identity of the Ripper is now impossible.

By Goose Egg, March 11, 2007 at 20:51

Without going into any debate on this, I only have 3 universal questions, and the answers are known to even a kid.

1. Who is the stronger sex: Men or Women?

2. Who controls this world: Men or Women?

3. Who are the consumer of
this trade : Men or Women?

Now let us not argue about some miniscule percentage of Women, who may qualify to be the answer to the questions above and let us not bring the imaginery God or Un-God into this or dream of filling the inner void of the Menfolk around this world to get out of this menace.

And it is only the Men, who can check this growing problem (though can not bring an end to it altogether)to a large extent but for their own vested interest in it and lack of will and strength of resolve to do it.

PERIOD.

I believe that there is a

By larsmith, March 12, 2007 at 06:40

I believe that there is a genetic disposition for men to be pushy and to lack empathy / sympathy and it's a woman's nature to submit / give in and yet to have an unending ability to show empathy / sympathy.

Now, if ever there was an over-simplification of things, this is one of those times, for I've met men who are cowards, unable to lead, unable to take a stand if their lives depended on it and there's women who, in a time of war, I'd either follow into battle or would love to have backing me up in time of battle, who could be as ruthless as any warrior who ever lived.

I've seen both in real life and in this forum ( orato ) that tho women express some strong opinions and tho they can be so typically vitreolic with their words, they haven't got what it takes to stay in for the long haul, while at the same time, I've seen men here who haven't got the good sense to know when to back down.

Now, you can fault the man who doesn't have the good sense to know when to shut up ... but ONLY if you also fault the women, who given a chance to lead and to control the situation and to dominate it, back down and back out of the conversation. They "snipe" but they don't have it in them to see the battle thru to the end.

There are differences between men and women that are genetic, more than they are culturally learned. They permiate our culture and yet as pervasive as these differences are, they are, too often, either denied or ignored.

Just as some people have different attributes ( like finger dexterity, eye/hand coordination, sense of musical pitch, trouble-shooting skills, etc ) so also the genders have different attributes which are not learned but are an intrinsic part of each gender's personhood.

Having said that, the piece of the "human nature" puzzle which has yet to be properly addressed is "responsibility".

For example, men have a responsibility to control how they execute their inner nature to dominate and to control. It is a sad truth that so many wars have been perpetrated on the fuel of a man's ego. Similarly, it's a sad truth that so many wife-beatings have been similarly fueled by a man's selfish ego.

One of the predominant themes of many of today's cultures is one of "rights". On the opposite side of the coin to "rights" is "responsibilities" and another sad fact of many of our cultures today is to flip that coin over and to learn of and to exercise responsibility.

For there to be responsibilities, there must also be an underlying motivation. Without proper motivation to be responsible, few humans pursue responsibility as they should.

With out a knowledge of morals and The Author of morality, people do that which is right in their own eyes. Their motivation is often selfish and/or self-centered. They lack a sense of responsibility and lack any awareness that they are accountible and, in many cases, would deny any sense of either.

Some of the most unhappy and insatiable people thru-out history have been those who are either unaware of ( or who deny the existance of ) their responsibility to fellow man and to their Creator, similarly believing that they are in no way accountible to either.

Seeing ( hearing / reading ? ) the number of women who are so obviously spiteful / resentful of men as the above respondant is not only evidence of irresponsible male influence in that respondant's life but also of that respondant's defeminization. It's evidence that she's feeling hurt to the point where she lacks either sympathy and/or empathy for men. It's sad to see she's become ( and/or is becoming ) more like the men she despises, hardened and ruthless, ready to crush and to dominate the object(s) of her loathing.

Hi Allan,

I agree you have researched well into this problem and your analysis is definitely very interesting but I stand by what I stated.

By the way, I am a heterosexual male and a resident of Canada.

Shyamal, My apologies for having assumed ... and for having assumed too much. I classify myself as a gay heterosexual ( gay used in the traditional and not current sense of the word ) and was born in Nova Scotia many moons ago.

One can not find the solution to the "sex trade" exclusively nor predominantly in the male ... nor in the female ... portion of this equation but rather by discovering The One who has the cure for their common human nature.

Lustful men will exist, whether or not there are women trading that which is priceless for a paltry price. ( There is no price for which a woman should trade not only her intimacy but her soul ).

Women willing to exchange themselves for a price will always exist, as will there always exist selfish men and women who are anxious to market them for selfish profit by "selling" flesh in this manner.

When we lay exclusive ( or even almost ) blame on one or the other, it's like removing only part of a malignant cancer.

By Goose Egg, March 10, 2007 at 19:34

Prostitution is basically a by product of unjust economic and social structures and the most obvious from of gender oppression.

Stereotypically, these women are seen as trash; these are individuals who have sexually transmitted diseases and people with no morals or respect for their bodies. Currently women working as prostitutes are perceived as bad girls, disregarding norms of acceptable behavior, suffering the 'whore' label, and "increasingly criminalized by the state, policing practices, and the lack of effective action taken by the state to address male violence against women.
There are numerous opinions and attitudes about prostitutes and the industry remains in business because society has allowed the institution.
To legalize or not to legalize continues to be the question at hand in the modern era. Abolitionists and regulationists are still debating which solution is better for the government, society and the women of the business. Abolitionists leading the reforms today are still social and religious conservatives. Their main points for prostitution to remain illegal include that prostitution undermines the social institution of marriage and exploits women as well as poisoning the country's moral climate.
For generations if not centuries, the causes and consequences of prostitution have rested on women. However, as there would be no prostitution without market demand, there would be no industrialization of sex without commodity consumption.
In the twenty-first century, prostitution and other sex work is one of the most thriving industries internationally. Although still viewed morally wrong, women who sell sex are still allowed to continue their trade. The fact is sex work is an exceptionally lucrative market and prostitution will only continue to grow internationally.
Why has prostitution been allowed to continue? The answer is simple: men.

Period.

Shyamal states "Why has prostitution been allowed to continue? The answer is simple: men. Period."

I'm sitting here, with bated breath, wondering where the woman is who mocked me for having expressed my opinion. I'm waiting for that knowledgeable woman to devalue Shyamal's comments as opion.

As long as we say MEN are the reason prostitution is allowed to continue, we discount the well known fact that there are many women pimps and business owners as well. I'd be pleased to hear from those Asia who've seen this to be true where they live.

Prostitution is allowed to continue due to the corruption of people's hearts and minds. Sad but true is the fact that there are judges, police and politicians who are up to their wallets and beyond, with their involvement in prostitution ... and not all of them are male.

There's an old saying which says goes like this "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." It is the greed in people's hearts which leads to all sorts of ungodly choices and actions, not the least of which is people's lust for power & money and the physical spiffs which come along with both.

To state that "men" are the reason that prostitution is allowed to continue is to miss the mark and to deny the fact that it is the ungodly selfishness of the hearts of mankind, with its two genders, which is the undercurrent of prostitution and all it involves.

Until you address the true cause of abhorant behavior and until you get busy with the only Solution, it's a given fact that there will be pimps, johns and prostitutes, there will be crooked cops, judges, lawyers, preachers and politicians ... and you and I will continue to satiate our insatiable inner void with physical things which can never satisfy.

We are creatures of a Devine Creator. Until we figure out what that Devine Creator expects of us and until we surrender all of our lives to that Devine Creator and find out how to live within the bounds that Creator has set forth, we are destined to live selfish lives and never be satisfied.

By larsmith, March 9, 2007 at 04:25

Leslie states "The only thing that is older is the target market for their business, and that is the 'Johns' who may really be be the ones to blame when fingers are pointed and people are judged."

Now we've gone and done it. It's a sad fact of life that we point the finger outward and blame others instead of accepting responsibility ourselves.

There would be no exchange of money for fake sex if there was no one available to provide the fake sex.

There would be no harlotry if there were no harlots.

Having said that, our society and our government and our law in our respective countries should take a close look both at prostitution and the clientele and increase the penalty for both.

They should increase the penalty for the pimps and for those who organize to pimp prostitutes of any gender or age.

There are in the Orato forum women who have prostituted and I would respectfully suggest that if they're serious about helping other prostitutes, they will work aggressively to provide to the police details of pimps on the street and anyone else involved in coercing girls, women, boys and men into prostituting.

I'm hoping they will be not only willing to participate with law enforcement but will be pro-actively involved in doing everything within their power to turn in and report every onet hey can who's involved in the sextrade, regardless of their gender or social standing.

There's only one lasting solution to this issue of prostitution and johns.

That solution has to do with recognizing the inner void that both prostitutes and johns have and finding The Way to fill that void.

As long as the Inner Void exists, so also will exist selfish men ( and in some cases, women ) who willingly if not anxiously lay down their cash for "favors".

As long as the Inner Void exists, there will be pimps coercing girls and women into the trade and forcibly keeping themin the trade.

As long as there is the Inner Void, there will be women voluntarily becoming prostitutes and even some who themselves are the pimps.

"blaming" the johns won't solve the problem.
"blaming" the prostitutes won't solve the problem.

Showing these people The Way to fill the inner void is the only solution and will only be the solution when these people accept and implement the solution personally in their own lives.

By Leslie Benisz, March 9, 2007 at 17:01

Leslie Benisz

So if we get rid of the harlots then harlotry will disappear?
Is it really that simple?
What will the 'johns' do when every prostitute is imprisoned and/or reformed and forced to work in regular jobs?
Will they suddenly change their behavior and become righteous men who are loyal to their wives and girlfriends?
Even in countries like Saudi Arabia there are many rich men who own their own harems filled with women, many of which are from foreign countries.
As to whether or not these women are treated well and given the luxuries that an oil sheik with strong ties to the royal houses can afford is a mystery.
Women from Asia, Africa, and the eastern European countries often answer job advertisements to work as models or even legitimate jobs such as waitresses in foreign countries.
The advertised monthly salaries and benefits are much more than they can earn in a year and many of these young women end up as slaves in a billion dollar industry known today as 'human trafficking'.
In addition, many of the prositutes in western countries started out as young teenagers or sometimes even children.
These women who were once little girls took to the streets after being sexually and physically abused by some of their male family members.
With no money, few friends, and being too young to understand what services are available to them or even what rights they have the streets are often the only place for them to go.
What is an 11 year old little girl who is too traumatized to go back home going to do?
If she's lucky, a she might be picked up by the police who will place her in a safe enviroment such as a foster home or shelter for street kids.
However, much like the wolves in the forest the streets are filled with predators who look for fresh young meat.
By the time these young girls are about 14 they are hooked on drugs and they have to turn tricks to survive another day and avoid getting another beating from the pimps who work these girls to the bone.

Very few women who are intelligent enough want a life like this.
The myth that women are here by choice and are just as guilty as the ones who exploit them is part of the problem.
Perhaps some prostitutes may have chosen to stay in their field after working for so many years due to their lack of confidence in being able to ever change their lives and possibly because they've just given up.
The smart young women that they dreamed of becoming were murdered long before and what's left is an empty shell that is for sale to any man with enough cash.

So I don't blame all men for the problems of prostitution and there are most definately many women who are also to blame for prostitution and it's effect on society.
However, every hooker and high class call girl who makes her living by renting out her body didn't start out that way.
Prostitutes all still human beings under all that sexy make up and the sexy clothes they wear and if they want a way out there should be more avenues for them to do so.
