The VP Debate: The Bold And The Beautiful

There was a clear winner in the vice presidential debate. But who?

She didn’t do well, because doing well doesn’t mean ‘doing okay’ or ‘passing the test’ or ‘restoring confidence’ and especially not ‘passing the bar’ that every pundit spent so much time and effort on Thursday afternoon dropping to the floor like amateur baton twirlers. '

The one and only vice presidential debate was held on Thursday, October 2 in St. Louis. It was a debate between the bold and the beautiful...but who was who? The media wanted to say that neither candidate had a clear victory. What debate were they watching? Was there another debate going on that I didn't know about? Strange...

St. Louis, MO - I was so tempted yesterday, watching the cable news networks from my parents' house here in St. Louis, to go all the way down Clayton road to Washington University and join in on the traveling circus that has become the 2008 Presidential Debate Coverage.

I was tempted to do this not because I wanted to get a glimpse of high-profile political figures or celebrity journalists — no, not to get a glimpse of them — but to walk onto their make-shift sets and smack them in the face.

I, for one, was sick after hearing this incessantly repeated notion that all Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin had to do last night was meet a certain level of expectations; cross a bar that, thanks to those hard-hitting network media figures, was practically rolling across the Wash U Quad and up onto the stage of the Graham Chapel, Palin kicking it along with a wink and a smile.

The biggest beef I had yesterday with the cable networks was their insistence that this lowered bar existed. Don’t they get it? They are the ones who are lowering the bar; the bar is theirs to lower, they are allowing it to be lowered. How else can I say it?

Sure, I understand that they think they were merely addressing Palin’s public perception following those atrocious, and now infamous, interviews with CBS’s Katie Couric that preceded Thursday night’s debate, but the news media forgot one thing: their job is to inform the public, not let the public inform them.

Let the public think what they want to think; do your jobs as journalists, or risk doing one of the greatest disservices to your country possible by generating a characterized and overwhelmingly false image of a vice presidential candidate.

Actually Dave, there were two debates last night. There is a federal election going on in Canada as well.

I certainly invite anyone who is interested in seeing ACTUAL differences on the political spectrum discuss and engage each other on points to pay attention as opposed to what goes on in the States – two of the most right wing political parties in the West – one admittedly so, the other lies and panders to the fringe only to govern as right or more right than their counterpart. I support the Republicans, if for no other reason, you know where you stand.

If anyone is interested, the Conservative Party of Canada rests to the left of the American Democrats – after all, they do support universal health care. The NDP (New Democratic Party) would be considered a communist branch (some people in Canada agree with that assessment actually) and would be marginalized in the press if the same platform was tabled there – see Ralph Nader. But the Northern elections do lack the entertainment value of their southern neighbours – probably because the media does not tend to sensationalize (as much) every god-damned thing that comes down the pike. Everything is the worst ‘this’ since ‘that’; tough to find ‘news’, easy to find ‘commentary’.

And I watched only a few minutes of the replay on MSNBC – from what I saw Biden won clearly, but I didn’t see the whole thing – I’ll try to watch some youtube stuff on the weekend, although I don’t anticipate my mind being changed (but hope it does).

David,

You and I disagree on our votes and our impressions of last night's debate, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. I caught myself chuckling a few times, even though some of your characterizations were a bit difficult for me to take ... but hey, it's a free country and a laugh is better than an argument any day!

And btw, I agree with you about Fox News being biased. My order of bias: MSNBC, NBC, CNN, Fox News, CBS, ABC. In my ranking Fox News is the only outlet with a right-wing bias and all the others have a left-wing bias. But in all fairness, I almost only watch C-SPAN - in fact, I usually use their website so I can truly pick and choose. I gotta hand it to you, though! You really do seem to try to give them all a fair shot and you have quite a strong opinion of your own. I like that, even if I reach different conclusions myself.

Thank you for the entertaining read and I wish you good luck! (Oh, btw, I gave the debate to Biden also!) ;-)
