One group stands out above all others when it comes to pop music: The Beatles. Only two of the Fab Four remain with us to this day. Or is that the case? Out to prove that John Lennon still is alive is the focus of Let Him Be, a smart if not slick bit of hokum from Canadian director Peter McNamee. This deserving entrée at the Vancouver International Film Festival is making viewers believe all over again.

Forget about seeing old Beatles visuals here. Instead McNamee takes us on a road trip with two Torontonians in search of the elusive truth. Two documentary filmmakers take their search to a rural part of Ontario. The male half of the duo is gung ho about finding Lennon alive while his girlfriend seems more interested in finishing off her own film project.

Once in the countryside we are treated to a series of funny and campy interviews the outsiders have in hopes of honing in on a likely subject. Against all odds the pair encounter a rather reclusive resident who bears a rather uncanny resemblance to the famed leader of the band. From this point onward we are treated to some good music as the filmmakers delve into celebrity and the way relationships can unravel if one partner goes off on one tangent while the other strays in a different direction.

Uniform good acting and that small town feeling come home to roost in this quaint 82 minute minor treat that fans of music and the Beatles will get a kick out of. And the music once it starts going is rather stimulating as are the two lovers who may be suffering a rather rocky patch.
