Knives come out early and sparks fly continually in The Duchess, a dynamic drama from Paramount Vantage and Allied now creating open debates

Born rich can be both a blessing and a curse. Take the case of the Duke of Devonshire, for example. Trappings of wealth ooze forth from every pore in his tired aging body. Alas, this bachelor boy has no woman. Ladies seem to be at his beck and call with one woman, Georgiana, a likely choice for bride.
Youth is on Georgiana’s side along with a rather domineering, well-intentioned mom, Lady Spencer. Not wanting to pass up a future of wealth the marriage is “arranged” despite the vast age difference. Once the pair of lovebirds set up shop in a series of luxurious, over the top mansions, not all is well in paradise.
Matches come in all shapes and sizes and what we have here is a severe test of emotional bonds. Day by day we watch this front of affection evaporate with devastating consequences. Children play a central role in The Duchess with the Duke’s desire for a heir paramount over all else. Cads have nothing on the demeanour of this Duke who also enjoys the odd bedside encounter outside of wedlock.
Smart and full of style with a sensational eighteenth century atmosphere The Duchess is a winner on all counts. Superb acting, in particular from Keira Knightley (Bend It Like Beckham) as the woman of the hour just radiates on screen. Expect Ms. Knightley to earn an Oscar nomination for her performance here as the much aligned Duchess thrown into a marriage of convenience with dire ramifications.
