Gary is a tall man with a massive body to match his height. He sits beside me at the bar of The Eastside Grill in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts. It's the middle of summer, and what started as a chat with my girlfriend’s new boss has become my first job interview since college.
Gary, a former stand-up comic, now runs a carpet-cleaning business in the woods of Western Massachusetts. He drives a beat-up two-door Cadillac that survives on sheer willpower and a mile of duct tape. He’s a staunch Libertarian full of conspiracy theories, and isn’t shy about it. “Did you know UMass was created by a lesbian conspiracy designed to promote a liberal agenda?”
During the next hour, I'm bombarded by declarations that US currency is “military script” and the federal government the Nazi Party. For all his bombastic allegations, Gary manages to remain incredibly charming. He concludes every outlandish claim with, “Look it up online. It’s true,” and caps off the evening with, “The Internet proves all my falsehoods true.”
We step out to the parking lot, where he offers me a job updating his aging client database, stored on an even more ancient computer.
My employment for Gary ended abruptly, and though it was unique, I was glad to move on. At the time, I was optimistic about finding new employment. Northampton is full of employers looking to hire cheap young labor in the form of students and recent college graduates. It was time to hit the ground running.
Maybe it’ll happen today. Maybe I’ll get a call or an e-mail asking me to come in.
This thought has occupied my mind for most of the past nine months. That's how long it's been since my last steady job.
It wasn't long before I heard from someone willing to interview me.

Re: Am I Unemployable?
By hazelnut283@yah..., October 15, 2008 at 08:54I completely hear you Carlos. Currently I am also unemployed and job searching, though I have a BA and am working on my MA.
Though I do need to tell you about a site I discovered. So you know, I'm not getting paid for posting this (I wish!) but I tried it and I had tons of people calling me up for interviews (though unfortunately no full-time offer yet).
Here it is: www.jobsbyfax.com
You know all those jobs you are applying for online? And how you know that some employers just delete your email without even opening it? Well, the theory behind this site is that if you fax your resume, Someone HAS to look at it, since it arrives open for all to see.
Unfortunately you actually have to pay this site (about 10 cents by fax to each company), but it's worked pretty good so far... my voicemail keeps getting full from all the employers calling!
Best of luck to you Carlos... you'll find something soon, I'm sure!!
Re: Am I Unemployable?
By UffdaDave, October 6, 2008 at 08:53I've been there brother and I want to ensure you that it will get better. It took me a year before a job was offered after my lay-off, and I've been told it can take up to 18 months. The hardest battle is fighting the frustration over not getting the interview or not getting the job.
Like you I was also amazed at the lack of common decency and following standard protocols of letting the applicant know about the job status. I was told by one friend (in H.R.) that people are so busy these days but I shot back with how long does it take to write a simple email -- as my father-in-law once said: "Tell me yes, no or go to to hell, just tell me something."
The one real question I would like answered: why do I, the one who did his job, have to pay for the inability of the management person who couldn't do his/her job?
Good luck.
