Oops! Two Conservatives Forget Mics Are On When Talking About Sarah Palin.

Conservatives Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy were appearing on MSNBC today when they had what they thought was an off-air conversation. Turns out the mics were still on, and the things they had to say about V.P. candidate Sarah Palin, and isn't what the Republican party wants the public to hear.

Transcript:

PN: It's over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she's never looked comfortable about this --

MM: They're all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullsh*t about narratives --

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

I like Biden too – for the same reason I've always liked McCain – when on Meet the Press or another lesser political show, these two were always comfortable walking on the outside of the company line. And they both inevitably say things that make their own people cringe. Unfortunately their respective camps are holding the reigns pretty tight these days (especially the GOP) – but hell ya, the debates will be great theatre (I don’t think that anyone who actually watches them hasn’t already made up their minds going in – so called ‘great moments’ are usually digested second or third or fourth hand).

Hey SC,

Mike posted the Saturday night live clip with ‘Palin’ and ‘Clinton’ – go watch it – really funny. I’ve heard a rumour you don’t like tv – which is odd – we both have this in common and not – while televisions are among my favourite objects in the word, television is for the most part unwatchable tripe (thankfully some smart guy a long time ago invented sports). It really makes me wish these two women were going at it for the top spot – that would be worth watching. They are the only two REAL men in national politics these days. I swear sometimes I think I’m the only feminist I know.

Hey Melkor,

I actually posted the SNL clip on my site a few days ago, too. I thought it was hilarious! And Tina Fey did a brilliant impression of Palin! Personally, I'm looking forward to the Biden - Palin debates ... I don't know what that will mean! (Say that the way it sounded in my head ... like Tina Fey doing Palin ... try it, it's fun! ... "I don't know what that will mean!") I have a feeling I won't be changing my vote, though! I've seen Biden in quite a few debates and he's always my favorite ... entertainment value. Plus, I think he looks a little like Jimmy Buffett and I'm a total Parrott Head. Ok, I'm just being silly, but I am looking forward to that debate.

And thank you to Mike for also posting the video ... I'm gonna go watch it again for fun!

Mike,

I'm still laughing a little after the video! I'm actually glad this video exists. I think one of the many false impressions a lot of people have about Republicans is that we're all alike. Lol, and I don't think very highly of that pair on MSNBC. But that's just my own personal opinion. Personally, I also think that's part of the reason MSNBC hired them to 'represent' Republicans.

Well, what do I know? I don't watch TV. Like I've said before, I'm tired of corporate employees, presented to us as news anchors and journalists. It's human nature to inject bias into information, and it's the nature and purpose of a corporation to make as much profit as possible. Those two factors combined make it very difficult to rely on what we see and hear, unfortunately. In the corporate network business, ratings = profits, and sensationalism = ratings. Geez, don't even get me started on Fox News or any of the rest of them! But again, that's just my personal opinion. ;-)

Not watching television is kind of my only weapon against what I just described. Lol, I know ... kind of like spitting at a hurricane. Well, at least I don't absorb the garbage, OR the commercials that way! I don't need someone telling me what to buy, what to think, or who to vote for. Thankfully, there's TiVo! I like some things on television occasionally ... I just don't want any of the messaging.

Thanks for posting the video. I kinda wish everyone could see it. And FWIW, I'm voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. I have my own reasons and I'm proud of them. :-D

Thanks Jenny!

It made me laugh too. It's just sad that in order to hear what someone in the media actually thinks, you have to wait for them to be off camera. I'm sure there are Dems and Repubs in both camps that aren't thrilled with their parties' nominees, but you hardly ever hear it.

No TV??? How on earth do you live without A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila????

Mike,

A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila? ... "I don't know what that is" ;-)

Pretty funny but not surprising – McCain going outside the beltway is going to piss off some if not all of your typical establishment Republicans, especially the established women. I can’t really think of a Congress (Senate) woman who is known nationally who is not a totally polarizing figure (Hillary at the top of that list – although she would have made the best President of them all in my opinion) making it hard to appear non-partisan (why they even bother trying to appear this way escapes me however - we're not idiots).

I think this reaction tends to lend weight to the idea that McCain made a good choice. And it has been my experience that women (don’t think I’m leaving men out of this equation, just not relevant here) are EXTREEMLY competitive with one another. I think that the so-called ‘glass ceiling’ getting broken is fine as long as the one doing it meets a comfort level. Which is why I think most feminists won’t be voting for the Republican ticket despite decades of clamouring (rightly I think) for a woman who can elevate to the highest office (this is a guess and merely my opinion).

A question – what do the first female leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada have in common? Answer – they were all sh.t kicker-conservatives. False barriers are typically torn down by females on the right (this may be a western phenomenon but I’m doing this off the top of my head here) – a little disappointing they don’t get their props, even among their own party (to say nothing of the feminist movement in general).

Melkor,

Right on! I agree with almost everything you said ... and most especially about women being competitve.

I was in sales for 20 years. ... Very successful for most of that time ;-) in a completely male-dominated field. It's really not that hard to earn business if you truly care about what you say and the needs and priorities of your clients, but it is competitive and you have to stay on your toes. Now, that makes me an expert in nothing other than my own opinion.

But, if I can be completely 100% honest ... one of the things I like about Sarah Palin is her ability to retain her feminity. Geez, I know I just probably lost everyone's respect, but I'm being honest. But come on, we've already heard the jokes.

I mean, she's a woman ... what's wrong with being proud of being beautiful and not trying to look and act like a man? Isn't that really a part of the true definition of feminism? Lots of women in politics are beautiful (take Speaker Pelosi, for instance), but most of them are so jacked up on "image control" in a male-dominated field, that they are afraid to be themselves. Well, I guess I don't know what "themselves" really means for them, but brava! to Sarah Palin for being such a s**t kicker, and for being beautiful and feminine!

That's just my lil'ol two cents! ~twinkle~ ;-)
