NBA Finals Preview: Lakers vs. Celtics

While there are enough intriguing storylines to fill a stadium, once the ball is tipped, it will depend on the players and coaches on the court. So let’s put all the subplots behind us and take a look at the match-ups that will who will be crowned NBA champions.

Point Guard: Lakers’ Derek Fisher vs Celtics’ Rajon Rondo

It’s the classic example of youth against experience. Rondo has had his ups and downs so far this postseason, but he’s long and athletic and has proved that he can take over ballgames. When the second year PG plays well, the Celts usually win. If he can keep himself from making too many mistakes on the offensive end and limit his gambles on defense, he’ll do fine.

Derek Fisher has been the unsung hero for L.A. this season. The veteran has provided big leadership and even bigger shots throughout the season and in the playoffs. His tough defense and knack for hitting shots in the clutch will prove invaluable for the finals, and I think his steadiness will prove more important that Rondo’s athleticism.

Shooting Guard: Lakers’ Kobe Bryant vs Celtics’ Ray Allen

The second most interesting match-up of this series for me. These two have that ongoing feud ever since Ray Allen said Kobe was spoiled and would regret forcing Shaq out of town. These two really battle with each other. Alas, I’d be surprised if Kobe doesn’t kill in this series. After proving he can ‘get off’ whenever he wants against Bruce Bowen, he’s going to have a field day against Allen. The only worry for Kobe is that he’ll know he can score against Allen, so he’ll chuck up 40 shots a game and ruin the flow of the Lakers offense.

Ray Allen has been so Jekyll and Hyde these playoffs.
