Wa$ted! Drink Your Vodka And Save The Planet

Taking my trash to its final resting place was a real eye-opener. (Moses wasn't impressed either.)

They had thrown away quite a bit of vodka, so I had to drink it for them to show them it was still usable. '

WA$TED! premiered on Discovery Channel's Planet Green June 4 at 8 p.m. ET. Hosted by Annabelle Gurwitch, with “green” handyman Holter Graham, WA$TED! audits households' carbon footprint, confronting them with the shocking results. The homes are put on a “green regime” to clean up their acts and given a month to reduce consumption. Improvements are awarded to the households dollar-for-dollar for the recognized savings. Tune in to find out why drinking your vodka can save the planet.

Originally I intended to make fun of the environmental movement, but I ended up becoming one of “them.” I’m not really into turning people into hemp-wearing vegans living in yurts; my goal and the goal of Wa$ted is to take each household and reduce the amount of its waste. We’re trying to save people money and, in the process, we’re being very kind to the planet…saving some green by going a little green.

Garbage Tourism

Every day a landfill closes in this country. I had this real watershed moment when I got permission from my local waste management company to ride along with my garbage collector and take my garbage to its final resting place, which is the Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Los Angeles.

That landfill receives 8,000 tonnes of garbage a day, some of which is mine. I deposit my body weight in garbage every 20-something days. We all have to lose a lot of weight, or we have a real problem.

Throwing things away is a really unconscious act for most of us. When you actually see it for yourself, it makes a huge impact. The average American in our disposable society creates 4.5 pounds of garbage a day without even realizing it. We need to think about that.

Frat House Gone Green

Wa$ted went into 10 households. One of them was a fraternity house in Newark, New Jersey. The guys there really needed to save some money, and they were living in total eco-squalor.

These guys didn’t even realize their neighbourhood had recycling. They had 2,000 empty cans of beer in their backyard! It was absolutely nuts. So, we got them recycling.

Sorry, I should have clarified. They're all over Europe - they have two flush mechanisms; one for small jobs (less water needed) and another for bigger jobs! Pretty cool water-saving loo ;)

This is a great story - living in Vancouver this kind of thinking seems more natural? It seems to me that way, not patting myself on the back or anything, but every week my wife and I put out one or two small (grocery size) garbage bags, mostly food.

When we buy stuff, then there's a lot of waste, usually in the form of recyclable cardboard, but also plastics too.

I was quite shocked to hear about people have 4-5 cars, I have one car and I already wish I didn't drive much, but I can understand when you have a bigger family, everything increases exponentially. When i have relatives over, the small bag of garbage per week becomes, 1 per day, especially with kids around. I noticed that moms are usually too tired to think about "sorting" stuff...it definitely has to be easier.

Such a great story!!
I am all about being as green as I can but I will confess my shameful environmental nightmare secret that I too have a PTA as well.
Not only that but I have a CCA (Cleaning Cloth Addiction) those little pre-moisented clothes that clean everywhere.... yeah, hooked on those too.
I am not as bad as the lady mentioned ( I don't think I am) so I was so upset to not read how SHE GOT CURED!? What is she using now!? Product names and suggestions PLEASE...
And don't tell me a dish rag.. they sit around and get nasty. I do not have time to do laundry everyday.... which would be bad for the environment anyways.
I am now going to go and Google what the heck is a Yurt is anyways!?
