Euro 2008 warm-ups are wrapping up, as the countdown to the start of the competition is inside the 4-day mark. No one wants to enter the tournament on the wrong foot, but a few teams didn’t make positive impressions in their final warm-ups. There’s also some injury news to report, which is (possibly) good for Holland and (possibly) bad for Turkey.
Group A
Switerland coach Koebi Kuhn had a family emergency to deal with on Monday, as his wife suffered an epileptic attack, which delays Kuhn’s ability to meet up with his squad at their training facility. The good news is that his wife is fine, and he should also be able to link up with his team today.
Meanwhile, Swiss playmaker Tranquillo Barnetta is racing to be fit for the co-hosts’ opener against the Czech Republic after an ankle injury last month. His presence is important to Switzerland’s hopes to make it past the group phase, so hopefully he’ll be fit come Saturday.
The earth can start to revolve again, as Cristiano Ronaldo is just fine after having ice taped around his right ankle after Portugal’s first training session. As for his club future? Well, thats another story for another day.
Turkey may lose a key member of their squad for all of Euro 2008, as Bayern Munich midfielder Hamit Altintop suffered a muscle injury in training on Friday.
Switzerland striker Marco Streller will be calling time on his international football career after Euro 2008, thanks to regular bouts of abuse from Swiss fans. So what will happen if Streller, who turns 27 this month, scores some big goals for the co-hosts? Will they still boo him?
