Sharon Stone's Karma For Red Carpet Quake Comment

Last week during a red carpet interview, Sharon Stone questioned whether the devastating earthquake in China was a result of bad karma, because China is "not nice." The comment resulted in a watershed of anger, and today the French fashion house Christian Dior dropped her from its Chinese ads, releasing a statement of apology on her behalf.

What Sharon Stone said was, no doubt, completely without tact. I understand why people, especially Chinese, are hurt and angry. Regardless of what we may think about China's human rights record, the citizens of China should not suffer, and at this moment they are experiencing unspeakable suffering.

When I heard about the devastation following the cyclone in Myanmar, it saddened me to learn that military concerns were literally standing in the way of much needed aid reaching the survivors.

Are we not humans first, and political war-mongers second? In times of crisis, we should put our differences aside, realize we are all connected, and help because we can. When it comes down to basic human survival, we should put down our placards and arguments, and even our wars.

There is a time and place for Sharon's anger toward China, the nation. But in this instance we are not talking about China or any other man-made line in the sand; we are talking about 80,000 humans who have lost their lives and many more who are suffering deeply as a result. It's not the time to talk of nations, but of people. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...

That said, I don't think Sharon Stone should suffer too deeply. She's a woman who shoots from the hip, and maybe because of the devastating brain aneurysm she survived, she doesn't have the same etiquette filter as others. Who knows.

I liken it to the time the class bully in my high school died much too young. While we were all shocked, many people's first response was, "She was such a bitch."

China, the "nation," can be a bitch.
