Today we fling that word around as if people really understood what it means. Not many do. Oppression is so casual and insidious (ingrained) that it escapes most people’s awareness.
When someone turns their nose up, or makes any action, at anyone else, because they feel that the other is doing something not acceptable to them, this could be labeled the crux of oppression.
I feel it is part of our social character as a species to oppress anyone who doesn’t conform to the socially accepted norm. Any reason can be fabricated for this, drugs, alcohol, poor clothing, homelessness, skin color culture-you name it. It matters not what the reason for the oppressive action, even a disapproving glance, to be brought forth is.That is, because it basically fulfills a very common human need to belong, to feel superior due to our primate social nature.
The roots of oppression; a judgmental attitude, is the currency of our society today. Even alcoholics can indulge in it and feel themselves superior to marijuana smokers, because the law says they can hang their judgmental attitude on these “drug users” legally, because we have entrenched oppression into the criminal laws..

No wonder they got it wrong when the temperance people decided to oppress certain races on their substance use. They were very small minded in their understanding of addiction, criminal enterprise and human nature.
The fact is, we must become enlightened if we want progress in the plague created by Moralizing church goers of last century. Canadians would do well to realize that we are in conflict with our own human nature when we make laws which target others with our judgment.
