Soaring And The Art Of Umbrella Flight

Surely you can operate an umbrella and walk thinking about your challenges at the same time? Take along a recording device, either digital, or a pen and paper, and learn to keep a log of your flights as do all pilots. Jot down wind/weather conditions, what you were concentrating on, and the random ideas which flit by. This is no gimmick.

I postulate that throughout our modern times, perhaps one reason for the increase of the exponential number of creative, technical, ideas in the world, might have been due to the common use of the umbrella in western society.

This is an elegantly simple way of stimulating your lateral or creative thought process. The premise that my exercise is based on, is that if you’re exercising, being physically active with your heart rate up, as in brisk walking, you are on the threshold of creative take-off, already. The “added” insight / ingredient that I propose, is that of taking an authoritative approach to “flying” an Umbrella every chance you get.

I propose that if you take the “art” of flying your umbrella seriously, you will eventually never lose an umbrella to poor piloting skills, but also, you may benefit from the magical state of thought transference that you can attain under it, while staying dry. Think of soaring on a magic carpet ride. Why might this work, in my opinion?

If practiced with a sense of humor, I think it will soon put your mind in a state where part of your subconscious neural net will become engaged in keeping the proper flight “attitudes” for the Umbrella, as the winds switch and rear.

This will allow easier access for new thought patterns to flow. As if we are sneaking into the slightly ajar neural pathways, allowing new random thought associations to form and flit. You get all this while walking briskly, with the mind engaged on a project. Think of this non polluting, beneficial exercise at lunch, as part of your health regimen. You can’t lose! It’s low cost and elegantly simple.

I tried to draw out the book a bit with a detailed explanation of the “art” of flight, explaining that because the umbrella is a curved surface, it will generate lift with certain “angles of attack” of its “leading edge”.

A further enlightenment.

Today a discussion on intelligence and an expansion of some of my themes on lateral/creative thought, was presented on one of my favorite radio shows "The Dummies' Guide to Intelligence" http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/. Follow the "last show" links, May 3
