Movie Review: The Forbidden Kingdom

Modern day bullying sets the stage perfectly for this imaginative tale. What we have here is a Boston kid somehow miraculously transported back in time to an ancient land rife with pillaging. Caught off guard and in a strange land our Caucasian cuckold in no short order winds up in the fight of his life, and the war of the century, as renegade warriors duke it out for supremacy in a regal region of ancient China.

All the carnage here comes by way of curses and fiendish foes with a drunken horse rider just one of a trio of misfits charged with saving the kingdom from a power-driven monarch. Scintillating special effects rule the day in this somewhat hokey story of a clash of civilizations.

Likeable Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Jet Li (Romeo Must Die) team up as two good guys in search of a missing formula somehow connected to a powerful staff and fountain of youth potion. Aided and abetted by a beautiful young woman and an out to lunch 20th century youth played nicely by Michael Angarano (Seabiscuit) the quartet do battle to win a coveted prize: freedom.

Director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) wields a heavy hand here in the special effects arena. Laced with humour and ridiculous stunts, The Forbidden Kingdom packs quite the punch while admirers of martial arts tales should relish for 113 minutes.
