Taking The Heat From Chef Gordon Ramsay

If you can't take the heat, get out of his kitchen. On April 1, 2008 Chef Gordon Ramsay will once again be chopping his protégés into ship-shape in the premier of Hell's Kitchen Season 4 on Fox. He may be known for threatening to shove pumpkin up people's arses and throwing verbal daggers over canapés, but it's all in the name of perfection.

I’m very excited about Season Four, more so than any other year before. We’ve raised the bar. This year 22,500 participants entered Hell’s Kitchen. Finding 30 chefs in that bunch wasn’t difficult. It’s a great team of chefs.

This season I get put into this prosthetic mask - my name is Terrance from Texas - and I’m actually made up as one of the contestants, so nobody spots it. I went through six hideous hours of sitting there. I’m not very good at sitting down for six minutes, let alone six hours.

It was really weird to sit opposite the contestant Bobby on the coach when he’s like yelling at me, “I’m the black Gordon Ramsay and you guys, good luck, because you’re going to need it. I’m the five-star general.”

I was absolutely peeing my pants with laughter but trying to keep a straight face. I had a ponytail, long hair, which is really weird. Chefs don’t do ponytails and we shouldn’t do them because I guarantee that whenever there’s a discovery of hair in the food, it’s guaranteed it’s from the chef’s ponytail.

Of course, the pressure is on this year more than any other. I’m taking it more seriously and the stakes are a lot higher. The level of jealousy and insecurity in this industry is far greater than ever before.

I had all the previous winners on season four back judging. It was so nice to see them grow in stature and maturity. It’s quite nice to see how they handled that exposure. Not every chef deals with it properly; they get slightly excited, a little bit overconfident and then they miss out on the most important part. You don’t become a chef because you’re obsessed by becoming a celebrity.

The expletives don't bother me. Actually I find them amusing. This is the only reality show that I watch other than Kitchen Nightmares and I think Gordon Ramsey is brilliant! He comes across as down-to-earth and authentic which is something that most celebrity chefs couldn't pull off if their lives depended on it, especially Jamie Oliver who's nauseating. It always amazes me how much North Americans toot their own horns with phrases like "I'm a four star general" or the "I'm the black Gordon Ramsey" or "I'm the best ...". Some of these hopefuls really set themselves up to be humbled. I think that's part of the reason why I like the show so much - to watch the overinflated egos get shredded down to size. Right now I'm rooting for the Rosann from New York. She's got gumption. Louross irritates me with the "you've got to make love to the fish". What the hell is that all about? I'm sure there are other personalities that will emerge as the show continues. Looking forward to next week's show.

Lucky you Aftaab, because Hell's Kitchen is in the house! We get to talk to the eliminated contestants every week...If you have any burning questions about the show, I could probably squeeze them in.

Despite his brutal honesty and the occasional expletive that comes out of his mouth, I think Chef Ramsay is awesome, he tells it like it is, in an industry that is extremely competitive, and while i'd never want to be on the receiving end of his critique, i've never seen him be "mean" just for the fun of it, if anything, he's probably a big softie!

I agree Lu...except for the part about "occasional."
