Movie Review: College Road Trip

Proud and somewhat scatter-brained are words that come to mind when discussing one of Illinois’ finest, police Chief James Porter. Blessed with a beautiful wife and two adoring children James seems to have every step in the life of college bound Melanie’s life planned out. Not willing to see his baby girl go out of state papa is rather surprised to learn his budding freshman has applied to Georgetown University, thousands of miles away from home.

Chief Porter runs his home life much like his station: discipline is key. Trust, however, is not one of this man’s high suits as daughter Melanie regards him as somewhat of a control freak. This diversity of views sets the seeds for controlled chaos as dad takes the kids on a road trip in hopes of going to a more “reasonable” closer to home university. Along the way, naturally, there are mishaps aplenty in this juvenile comedy that features enough ridiculous situations, brainless comic moments and unconventional animals to appeal to the little ones. High brow fare this film just ain’t.
Lawrence (Blue Streak) rises to the occasion in this role and he’s a good father/authority figure. Daughter Melanie, on the other hand, really takes control of this comedy through the talents of Raven Symone (Dr. Dolittle 2). Motherly advice comes by way of Kym Whitley (Fun With Dick and Jane) who does have fun as a lady trying to wrestle with her children’s wishes and her husband’s rigid approach to life.
Watch for a scene stealing cameo by Donnie Osmond who steals the show as a wild and crazy transplant that our friendly officer encounters on the road. Short and succinct, College Road Trip is light weight fun that college – bound students may want to take a gander on, though it’s decidedly more appealing to those in the preteen range.
