Anonymous' War On Scientology

A group known simply as 'Anonymous' is waging a war on the Church of Scientology. Anonymous says it wants to remind the Church "who owns the Internet," thwart Scientology's censorship, gather allies, plaster the Church of Scientology's buildings with the truth and top-secret Scientology documents, and expose the intimate details of the Church's leaders. Says Anonymous, "The entire world must know the truth about the corrupt, abusive, illegal extortionist organization that lurks behind the Church of Scientology, the Sea Org, the OSA, the RST, and all its front and sub-organizations." Yesterday I stumbled upon Anonymous holding a protest in front of Vancouver's Church of Scientology on Homer Street. Their faces were shrouded, but they shouted their message loud and clear.

I am sure there was a reason they choose to wear Guy Fawkes masks. A little background: With the help of his Roman Catholic friends, Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the House of Parliament in London on November 5, 1605. Fawkes wanted to replace Protestant rule, but was caught before he was able to light the gunpowder. Maybe some of the protesters see themselves as people fighting to take away the control of a governing body, and in this sense, their gunpowder is information and their target is the Church of Scientology.

Whatever faith you subscribe to there is no charge to read the materials Bible, Torah, Quran they invite all to come explore, not just the rich.

For anyone who saw the scary/ disturbing Tom Cruise vid and want a good laugh, look up a parody by Jerry O'Connell it's quite good!

I just got a message from someone in the group who said the reason Anonymous was wearing masks had nothing to do with the Church of Scientology or its followers. It's an inside joke among Anonymous followers. However, she couldn't tell me more because of rules 1 & 2.

Not sure what that means, but apparently there are rules. I know Anonymous is aware it will be accused of using some of the same tactics as the church, and secret rules certainly sound a bit cultish. But I'd place my bets on Anonymous any day.

I love the anarchy-esk style of the anon persons as much as the anti-restriction-of-free-thought-ness.

Anyways, no more of that bullsh*t, still sh*t hot pictures!

If scientology is still alive next year, hopefully 10th feb 2009 will be MASSIVE, not just in the Internet sense, but full TV news coverage. Seriously, UK news has pretty much ignored the whole scientology issue since John Sweeny's report...

The masks are indeed a symbol of anon but believe me their use in the protest was to protect her members from Scientologists. The same reason why many wore scarfs and big hats and face paint etc.

Can I also be the first to point out that ALL protests were peaceful and according to our records not a single person got in trouble with the police in any country.

Ya i get that the masks are to display what the church does to its followers.
I can imagine that it was incredible to see.

I love the creepiness as well. I couldn't think of anything more fitting as a protest against something that is so shrouded in mystery.

I have to say, that I love that we are allowed to protest, I am left wondering what is creepier, Scientology or Anonymous? I think that it's the masks that did it for me....

The masks are definitely creepy, but I think it makes Anonymous' point - to show how Scientology co-opts people's personalities into the "Church think." I have to say I felt such relief when I heard their message through the megaphone. No one should be bullied into silence. It was awesome to see.
