The Naked Reporter Talks Drug Use In Sports

As most of you know I am a HUGE sports freak. I think it is okay to be known as a 'freak' when you have a passion for something! So, what the hell is going on with our professional sports players and all their drug use? As a child growing up, a major tomboy, I was always asking questions like: Who is that? What do they play? Why do they do it? Doesn’t that hurt? ... and my favorite question, who sucks the most? (so I could like them). I never once asked myself, is that drug okay because athletes are using it? So, I have to go deep into this one.

I understand that the sports all-stars we watch, love and follow have a lot of pressure on and expectations of them, but in my opinion that is more reason to show others how to handle it.

Most kids in America look up to professional sports players while they are going through extremely tough times - puberty, adolescence, and knowing it all! We are all trying to be role models for young children. There are those that don’t necessarily want to be put in that category, but once they decide to be a professional sportsman, they are. Children of all ages watch all types of sports and look up to the “pros.” Do we want our children, our nephews, and our grandkids thinking this is acceptable?

How the hell can those with such a gift and talent be willing to throw it away to stay young and gain an advantage over their opponents? I mean, there are thousands of people that would give their left arm to be stressed about “the game.” I am one of them; I had high hopes as kid. I wanted to play sports the rest of my life. I played softball from the time I was eight until forever, including while I was pregnant (that's another subject).

I grew up watching all the sports players become the “best” and I wanted to be like them. I realized in high school that I had to look outside of the box for further advancement. I continued to play softball, but to that I added field hockey, volleyball, the dive team and the men’s wrestling team. You want to talk about stress?

“Most kids in America look up to professional sports players”

Herein is the foundation of the problem. There is a flaw in making any media/entertainment stars heroes. Sports is no different except in the type of entertainment. Rather than needing singing skills, acting skills, they use physical skills. It makes them no more Nobel than any other humans. These other entertainers, which are magnified through the distorting lens of the camera, are also vulnerable to human greed. They will do almost anything to achieve the mega success, worth hundreds of millions, which they crave. We know what actresses were once forced to do for a role in a movie. Don't we know how ruthless you need to be to make it to the top of anything, business? Humans cheat.

The closer you get to the huge prize, the more they will cheat. It is you who is putting up the unreasonable fantasy. Your children would do better to pick more local heroes, but the marketer has their souls, doesn’t he?.

“For years America has been pushing anti-drug campaigns - “JUST SAY NO” - Well, the American Sport Federation (I made that up) needs to stick to that! JUST SAY NO…no bonuses, no resigning agreements, no fame, no RETIREMENT!”

Just because America did something for years, doesn’t hold much water with me. America has been making great mistakes for decades, centuries, at a time. Anti drug campaigns are dangerous, artificially created issues pointing to an oppressive streak, based on religious confusion. Humans have been ingesting substances since before we climbed down from the trees. (In fact some believe our exceptional minds to be caused by our ancestors having ingested hallucinatory substances, mutating our brains.) Since the first thing that wiggled, every one of my ancestors was free to ingest whichever substance they chose, as is every other life form still, today. They all chose well, without government interference, as I am here to prove. The ugly circumstances we find ourselves in are only due to these stupid laws of prohibition, born in small minded fundamentalist temperance clubs, which is the reason why your society has become so crime ridden and dishonest. What is worse, you have, through your economic dominance foisted this idiocy on the world. This issue is all about your attempting to oppress people through labeling them as “drug users” from other cultures-racism, one hundred years ago. You are all addicted to something, including consumerism, materialism and every substance under the sun, like every other human being on this planet.

What is unnatural is the American hypocrisy, which causes greed, corruption, and dishonesty in every sector of your society, all hidden behind a glossy, glitzy face. In fact Americans are so dishonest a people, that you would rather paint a false fantasy over reality, and make society suffer organized crime, corruption than look in the mirror.

You would do well as a society to give up your addiction to heroes, stars and entertainers as role models and teach your children to think on their own. Take a look at your willingness to follow any marketed dream, including the war on drugs, weapons of mass destruction, McCarthyism, and Jonestown/Waco type of fundamental crap.

If you put that much pressure to win on humans, as do the payoffs for these athletes, don’t expect saints. Just because people break into a sweat making millions, doesn’t make them super human, or even honest.

Although, Michelle, you paint yourself near perfect, because of your love of sports and your own challenges surmounted, it doesn’t give you the right to judge others. Just because someone chooses a joint over a beer, a steroid over a "healthy" sports regime shouldn’t make them a criminal. To criminalize cheating in sports is idiocy. When you guys learn to be honest with yourselves, is when you'll begin to raise honest children again. Hypocrisy causes more hypocrisy. "Just Say no" in a society where excess is worshiped is Just Plain Stupid/Naive.

“Viagra; it’s legal and has the reverse effect of what steroids are doing to your body! That’s The Naked Truth…Literally!”

Yeah, right, it’s OK, because it’s legal? What’s stupid, is that you think you need the government to tell you what’s right and therefore make us all the same-- legal.

WHATEVER A PERSON INGESTS IS NO BUSINESS OF ANYONE ELSE, EVEN IN SPORTS(give them a handicap, let them suffer the consequences of taking steroids. Start an unlimited enhanced sports competition sponsored by the Pharma companies, because you can't stop human nature. The "purity/sanctity of sports" is a fantasy created by American marketers, and exists only in the mind). EVERYONE WILL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR OWN ACTIONS IN LIFE, WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT'S, OR YOUR JUDGMENTAL INTERFERENCE.

WHO ARE YOU, AS EVERY OTHER AMERICAN, TO BE DRAWING LINES FOR EVERYONE ELSE?. LET THE LAWS OF GOD AND NATURE RULE, HE GAVE US FREEDOM OF CHOICE. American religious morons feel that they know better THAN GOD, though!

Thanks for the stimulating read Michelle

Well when I was listening to the Radio today, "The Dummies' Guide to Intelligence" http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/ I became aware of how right I am to refer to prohibition legislation as moronic, small minded.

On the segment about intelligence One thing that stood out as being relevant to back up my remark, was this fact: On extrapolating backwards from intelligence test scores, the researchers have been able to determine that compared to today, the intelligence level, in critical areas, was at the 50 points level, on the IQ scale about 100 years ago.

The fact that their legislation was moronic is evident by the exponential increase of drug crime and violence we see every year. By deduction though, we are more stupid than our ancestors, because we see the folly of their laws, and still we cling to these errors desperately. Why? Because, as I said this is about ingrained oppression, nothing else.

Hi it's me again, here to let you know you're doing a terrific job, I totally agree with you on drugs for performers, but it's as old as the hills. This thing about drugs has been around for centuries and more, but because of todays technology and the media the news is more available. In my eyes if a person has the knowledge of the harm they are doing to their bodies and minds and yet continue to partake, they are the fools of life. Question of the day-- was it the power of the man or DRUGS???? Love ya, keep the stories coming.

Drugs in sports:
Unfortunately this is a v ery old subjects as performance enaencing drugs have been used for many years in the former East Germany and in many Esatblock Countries.
It's only recently that this subject has received wider attention in the US media. Not that these substances have not been used for years and athletes have steadfast denied using them but now since it's out in the open, they can't deny it any longer.
I think there should be a world governing body - like the Olympic committee or similar - that governs this matter with strict enforcement and consequences for those that get caught cheating.

What athlete susing these steroids or similar substances fail to realize, or don't care about is this:
1. It's bad for any body in the long run
2. Obviously it gives them an unfair advantage over none users
3. Since the bottom line in many sports, on almost every level, is money, it's little wonder that officials and the media have little interest to stop steroid use since it increases the competativeness in many sports. Neither cares what happens to the athlets, nor do the spectators who are well aware of this situation.
The main problem I see here is this:
What kind of message are we sending to the young people of the world, and certainly in this country (USA) who already at highschool level seem to use such drugs?
All athletes should be performing with their natural abilities given them plus hard training, anthing else has little to do with sports and actually makes a mokkery out of it.
