Dena Gallant has faced many of her own personal demons. She left an abusive marriage in 2001. Her husband was deemed by police as one to kill. As a survivor of domestic violence, Dena Gallant could relate to the murder of Liana White, her neighbour.
Dena fell into depression because she was abused, stalked, filed restraining orders, suffered violations, and had her home broke and entered.
We never think we will be that one victim of deadly domestic violence, yet, in the Province of Alberta many families know that is hardly the case. The Province of Alberta has the highest rate of domestic violence. Stories like Liana White and Dena Gallant are falling through the cracks of the legal justice system.
Dena Gallant is fighting to have Unborn Victims of Violence Bill pushed though the House of Commons. She will have to wait until the House of Commons sits in the New Year of 2008 to have our Members of Parliament debate the concerns in this Private Members Bill C484.
Liana White was murdered in her home and her murder inspired her neighbour to fight. Liana White was pregnant and leaves behind a daughter. Her daughter will not have Christmas with her mother.
During that time Dena Gallant, marrying the same year, living in a house a few doors away with the same floor plan as Liana White, was in her own home being abused by her husband.
Liana White is one of the statistic in Alberta growing number of murdered women during a pregnancy. Pregnancy is ONE of the highest times to be at risk of being murdered, experts have stated time and time again.
Dena Gallant lobbied to keep Liana's White husband behind bars until his trial. Part of her quest for bail reform and justice reform.
