Weekly Reflections

Whenever we travel we return not only with specific memories of our journey and destination but with an overall 'impression' of our experience. Sometimes the impression is not so good, while at other times we may even say "I was so impressed with what I saw". We do the same with people. Some impress us while others have the opposite effect, and we may even say "I was not impressed with them at all".

There are those in life who are easily impressed which really means easy to influence. It doesn't take much to win their admiration, which may eventually border on worship. And then there are others who are almost impossible to impress. They seem unmoved regardless of the spectacle or the extent of the achievements of others. They either have a habitually negative vision of most things, or they have realized 'the trap' that being easily impressed can be.How about you? Are you easy to impress? Are you frequently heard to say: "WOW… isn't that/aren't they just amazing?" Do you fawn at the feet of others, metaphorically speaking? Or are you hard to move, hard to impress?

If you are someone who is easy to impress it probably means you have 'devotional tendencies'. Being easily impressed is not a bad thing in itself, but it can be a handicap if you are seeking to discern the deeper, more profound truths about life. Being easily impressed means there is the tendency to get trapped on the surface of life, caught in appearances. Whenever you allow your self to be impressed, in that moment, whatever it is that is impressing you is shaping your consciousness. When we were children we pressed shapes into plasticine and the result was the piece of plasticine was left with an impression shaping it.
