The Pros And Cons Of Ethnic Diversity

Certain facts of life are what they are, but it does not mean we have to like them. I certainly do not. As a German immigrant, I have been in the U.S. a very long time and have seen dramatic social changes, many good, many not so good, and some downright deplorable. A multi-ethnic society affects all people living in this country in one way or another.

Fist off I want to say this:
Responsibilities of immigrants: As an immigrant, I should not expect to live "like home" in every aspect of my former life. Nor should I expect for my new adopted country to go out of their way to accommodate me that I can fully pursue my full former life-style. I chose this country as my new home so I should make some concessions and adjustments and not the other way around. Why are too many immigrants not getting this point?

If a country accepts immigrants - people that for one reason or another are risking to uproot their and the lives of their families - then I think they do have certain obligations as well. Demands are something they have to earn after assimilation into a countries society and life. If I live in a country where the Government does not provide living conditions that allow me to get a decent job, feed my family and live a relatively "normal" life, then I should be very thankful to a country willing to accept me into their mids to give me this opportunity to provide a better life for myself and or my family.

I believe as an immigrant I should feel compelled to make an effort to learn the language, English in this case, and not expect the rest of society to learn "my" language, as many seem to be doing. If nothing else, this will help myself to perhaps get a better education, in turn a better job and better life. Why so many immigrants can or will not understand this and refuse to learn English is beyond me?
