Chaos once again wreaks havoc on the streets of America in Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Ace director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) brings his wicked eye for evil enchantment to the big screen. Taking off where the first Hellboy left off, we are whisked away into quite the imaginary world as a group of closet monsters hired by the good old American government goes about trying to snuff out a group of infidels.

After a quick smart opening that tells the origins of Hellboy we are immersed in the ultimate tale of good versus evil. Plot-wise things are a touch complicated. This time out Hellboy locks horns topside with some undesirables led by a Prince Nuada who needs some sort of ancient artifact to activate a long lost army. Naturally, Hellboy is not about to let that happen.

Into the mix this time is love interest Liz Sherman whose interaction with the red faced monster is priceless. Where the film truly excels is in its look with some great new monsters that are wondrous and designed with considerable dazzle and ingenuity. Classic one-liners spewed from the lips of Hellboy take off the edge of the violence that’s comic book in the extreme.

Veteran actor Ron Perlman (The Island of Dr. Moreau) again lights up the screen as the fully engaging, cigar chomping monster with a heart and desire to save the world. In charge of trying to keep this meddling monster in line is Tom Manning, again effectively portrayed with great timidity by Jeffrey Tambor (Meet Joe Black.) Love interest Selma Blair (Legally Blonde) has fun with her fiery depiction of Liz Sherman with Luke Goss (Blade II) downright nasty as Prince Nuada, a man on a mission.

Unbelievable stunning visuals and lots of campy dialogue make the 110 minute Hellboy II: The Golden Army a decidedly guilty pleasure that fans of the first should fully embrace.
