Photo Essay: Happier Times In Mykonos, Greece

In the best of times, thoughts of Greece evoke images of white sandy beaches, tanned bodies and a vibrant culture. This past week, thoughts of Greece have turned to destruction, as fires burn away people's lives, homes and threaten the ancient land. This photo essay brings us back to a happier time, making us realize even the simple pleasures are worth fighting for. The Greek island of Mykonos is well-known worldwide for the celebrities it attracts, for the intense nightlife and its tolerance for gays and nudists, ever since the 50s and 60s, when such tolerance wasn't really tolerated that much! Mykonos, however, is also world famous for the bluest sea with a velvet feeling and the phenomenal sandy beaches. One of the beaches that attract the young and fashionable crowd is "Blyntri," better known by its modern day name of "Super Paradise." Once a haven reserved for gays and nudists, it now attracts a more mainstream crowd of multi-colored young people from all over the world. Before long, the fun seems to be out of control, due largely to the fact that alcohol, which is legally served over the counter in Greece to youngsters of all ages with no discrimination, is often served for free. It's here that several alcohol manufacturers undertake promotional campaigns on the high season weekends. Professional dancers participating in such campaigns and everyday people dance side by side wherever...by, or even in, the pool, on tables and on the main bar, while ice cubes fly around. Adrenaline runs high at the Super Paradise beach bar and the fun doesn't end, until it's time for a night on Mykonos town, the restaurants, the clubs and the after hours spots...
