Reducing Veterinary and Grooming Expenses

Even in an uncertain economy, it's still possible to maintain your pet's health without further straining an already tight budget.

Work out a comprehensive health plan with your pet's vet; ask about any medical, senior or other discounts you might qualify for. Inquire about special sales (you never know!) If your pet needs medicine, ask the vet to write out a prescription for the generic brand, if one is available. You can then go and comparison-shop at local drugstores, saving a fortune.

Maintain Annual Pet Checkup

By all means, take your pet in for at least one yearly checkup. Sometimes a discount is given for coming in during off hours or midweek when it's less crowded, or being the first or last appointment of the day. Try to avoid Mondays and Saturdays.

Dollar stores offer a wealth of pet toys, supplies, food and other items (often you'll find Friskies blend or Purina dog chow (or lesser known brands made by the same company) that are just as good as the expensive ones. Does your pet really need that new Vera Wang flea collar or Calvin Klein dog food?

Ensure Your Pet Gets Enough Exercise

Another easy way to save costs is simply keeping your pet physically fit. Did you know that nearly half are overweight, therefore placing them at risk for major health problems and a shorter lifespan? For a pet of normal weight, you should be able to feel ribs, not fat or a big belly. Carefully measure your pet's food, have a daily exercise routine and watch those treats and snacks from the dinner table. The major pet food companies (and even some minor ones) carry a dessert line for dogs and cats that is directly suited to their needs.

An injured pet can require extremely expensive medical care; keep them close to home. Don't let your dog or cat stray. Besides the obvious reasons, an indoor kitty or dog in a fenced area will be less subjected to speeding cars, other animals, poisonous plants and other safety hazards. And when walking your dog, always use a leash.

Cut Grooming Costs

Basic pet grooming can be done at home (bathing, cutting and trimming nails, giving medicine, even brushing teeth. Not only will you save money, but you may even become so skilled at this that you could create a small business for yourself.
