How to Bake a Four Cheese Lasagna

Variations on the Italian Pasta Classic

Lasagna is a very popular Italian pasta dish that can be prepared in a variety of ways. Ingredients can include vegetables, different meats, poultry and cheeses. Cooking methods include oven baking, slow cooking and even microwaving. This particular recipe is a rich-tasting family favourite that is popular among both adults and children.

Lasagna Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (1 lb) can chopped tomatoes
  • 2 (6 oz.) cans tomato paste
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. oregano leaves
  • 1/2 (8 oz.) pkg. lasagna noodles
  • 1 lb Ricotta cheese
  • 8 oz. Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 - 1 cup Cheddar cheese, shredded

Preparing the Lasagna

  1. In a medium pot, boil spinach for 5 minutes, then drain and finely chop.
  2. In a large frying pan, lightly brown beef.
  3. Add onions, celery and minced garlic.
  4. Once the onions are fully cooked, add the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, water, parsley, salt, sugar, garlic powder, pepper and oregano.
  5. Simmer on low heat, uncovered, stirring occasionally for about 20 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, cook lasagna noodles as directed; drain.
  7. In a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan, spread about 1 1/2 cups of sauce.
  8. Alternate layers of noodles, sauce, Ricotta, spinach, Mozzarella and Parmesan, ending with the cheeses. Top with cheddar cheese for added colour and flavor.

Baking Instructions

  1. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes, until lightly browned and bubbling.
  2. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve with crusty garlic bread and salad, if desired.
  3. 6-8 generous servings
