Survivor Micronesia's crew of castaways have perfected blindsiding each other in the fierce bid for $1 million. The game took an unexpected turn when James was forced to quit due to a potentially life-threatening infection in his finger, and Alexis was stuck hobbling after a bad bang to the knee. When survivors smell weakness, they pounce! Here's what Alexis and James had to say about joining the jury.
Alexis Jones: Why did we try to vote Amanda out? Amanda - and this is meant to be a compliment - was a bigger threat on the jury because people liked her. As you're wittling down to a smaller number of people, it's less about who is the physical threat and more about who's the jury threat, the social threat. Amanda obviously had Ozzy on the jury, she obviously had James on the jury and if people have automatics then that poses a major threat.
Sending Amanda to Exile Island was a strategic move. We were in an alliance so I didn't think she would find the idol and later use it against me. I knew I wasn't going to send one of the boys and it was a given that I was going to choose Natalie if I won the challenge. During the challenge, I made a deal with Cirie that if she didn't cut my rope and I won, I'd take her with me. So then it was just between Parv and Amanda, and Amanda had already opted to go.
I had no idea Amanda had the immunity idol at tribal council. The moment I saw it I was just devastated. I knew as soon as she went prancing up to Jeff swinging that idol that my game was over.
I grew up with four older brothers and I get along with guys really easily. Ozzy and I spent an entire day on Exile and the moment we got there, the first thing out of my mouth was, 'Dude, I'm not here to flirt with you, it's not my game. You have your alliance, I have mine - can we just kick it and have one day out of the game?' And we ended up talking for hours and became really good friends. It was not flirtatious at all.
In that scene where Ozzy and I were lying together, Amanda had been laying there with us for two hours and we were all talking and laughing. Then she gets up for two minutes to go to the bathroom and, of course, they film just me and Ozzy laying there. It's the beauty of editing and it made for great TV. But I did not know Amanda had been upset about our relationship. I felt awful because I would never disrespect her by flirting with a guy she liked.
I do think that made me vulnerable. Right after I got voted off, I thought it was ridiculous to vote off the girl who can barely stand. Why would you not take her with you knowing that she wouldn't be able to compete against you in the major physical challenges? I thought it was a given they would send Natalie home but after watching the show and seeing Amanda's comments, it absolutely made sense that it was me. Jealousy's a pretty powerful thing.
I trusted my alliance completely - obviously, that's how you're blindsided. My fault was putting expectations that I had on myself onto other people. My strategy was to have an alliance that I would trust with everything and never screw over. I was planning on playing the game of getting four or five to go to the end and then battling it out with immunity - at that point it would have been anyone's game.
At one point, Amanda had come up to me bawling, pulling on the heartstrings, asking me to be honest if she was going home, asking for the respect of letting her know so she wasn't blindsided. All the girls had made a pact saying they weren't going to blindside each other, so it was very disappointing; I wouldn't have done what she did.
I respect Amanda's game. We chose to play the game very differently - I don't fault her for that - and outside of the game she's a great girl. I have no beef with her whatsoever.
James Clement: Micronesia was a lot easier than China. We were on a beach. We had a quay. We had coconuts falling from the sky to feed us and give us drink! But in that type of sub-tropical climate, infection is always out there and it's probably the worst thing that could happen to you because it will take over. They warned us about it and I wasn't surprised it actually did happen.
The finger is doing well now. A lot of antibiotics and a little bit of therapy and I'm alright. I had two X-rays, a couple of blood tests to make sure the infection hadn't spread through my system, an IV three times a day with different antibiotics and therapy - I had to do finger drills!
If I wasn't medically taken off, I think I probably would have been voted out. I jokingly say that I would have wooed the girls with my swagger and romanticism, but I was on the Titanic and the ship was sinking. What would I have done differently? Not messed with coconut butter! Leave that stuff alone and certainly don't put that inside cuts on your finger.
