Hanson, New Kids On The Block, Backstreet Boys, and the Spice Girls might soon be at a stadium near you thanks to a 90s revival and the return of pop bands that party like its 1999.
Hanson hit the charts in 1997 when their record Middle of Nowhere made the 3 brothers pop idols with the tween set. In their years out of the spotlight, they started a record label called 3CG Records and all three brothers are now married and have children.
Now the Hanson brothers have recorded a new album called Shout It Out, which has a slightly edgier sound, which they are touring to promote and are in Canada this week, (Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Belleville) before going to the US and the Philippines. Hanson also hopes to release their own beer called "MMMHops," an homage to one of their major hits from the 90s, "MMMBop".
During their heyday, the Backstreet boys sold over 77 million records. In 2009, they reunited (minus Kevin Richardson) to record a new album called This Is Us. The following year, they joined the New Kids On The Block on tour. The NKOTB will tour Europe in April and show no sign of slowing down.
If you examine Backstreet Boy's tour history, they never really disappeared, but it wasn't until the tour in 2010 that they truly worked their way back into the spotlight. Now they'll be in Europe and Australia in April and May as well and then head to Indonesia in June.
According to Mainstream, "The Backstreet Boys remain the biggest-selling boy band today with total record sales of 120 million. The band also has the two best-selling boy band albums ever, including 1999's Millennium with worldwide sales of 35 million and 1997's self-titled effort with worldwide sales of 28 million. It also placed 13 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100."
The Spice Girls originally formed in 1994 and remained very popular until Geri Halliwell left the group in 1998. During their heyday, the group sold 43 million records.
The Spice Girls attempted a reunion tour in 2008 in promotion of their Greatest Hits album, which included two new songs. Although, a reunion for the Spice Girls proved relatively unsuccessful, rumors have surfaced that the girls may reunite again for a performance at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee or the 2012 Summer Olympics.
"Scary Spice" and "Ginger Spice" are said to be keen to join up with their former band members but the main holdout is "Posh Spice" or Victoria Beckham who is busy with four children and a fashion line.
According to Entertainment Weekly, "It will be a very busy year for the Girls regardless. Their jukebox musical, Viva Forever, is on its way to a West End premiere. Mamma Mia producer Judy Craymer directed it, and Absolutely Fabulous funny lady Jennifer Saunders has reportedly been been involved in the development of the book."
So the next time you hear one of these bands on the radio and think you're experiencing a flashback, think again - the past has come back to haunt, and rock, you.
