Ten Things Bands Sometimes Forget: A Show Booker's Perspective

russian mishkas band, show booker, band

Some bands are harder to book than others.

...but changing your name from Dragon Killers, to Masters of the Universe, to Dragon Masters, to The Meatball Sandwich Artists one week before a festival show won't make you any new fans. '

During my life, I've learned a few things. During my life as a show booker, I've learned at least ten.

1) In order to execute a show, a booker needs to know details and specifics, typically two things bands aren't so good with:

Booker: "We can find a sound tech but if you know of someone..."
Musician: "Yeah, I got a couple friends who could probably do it."
Booker: "When can I get confirmation on that?"
Musician: "Oh we'll work it out, no worries."

Or...

Booker: "We will print your handbills for pick-up. Please let us know when you'll be stopping by so we can have them ready."
Musician: "I'll come by in the next couple days."
Booker: "Tomorrow's Saturday. The office won't be open. How about Monday?"
Musician: "Um-I'm not really sure what my schedule is right now..."

2) Show up with stage presence, GOSH. If you've had 18 beers and you're still singing to the ceiling with your legs together, you might suddenly find you're hard to book. Also, while on the subject of performance, you should be able to stay standing without falling down, and know better than to break into a ballad on the first song of a Friday night at a Sports Bar...

3) When you've never toured further than Chilliwack and the average random person in Vancouver has never heard of you, don't expect a $700 guarantee and two flats of beer.

Emily, quite honestly, I absolutely love your style of writing. It's amusing and entertaining, and also direct and sophisticated.
