The new face book phenomenon has brought out the exhibitionist and voyeur in all of us.
Instead of going to the mall and riding the escalator so they can look up girl’s skirts - men now have Facebook. And instead of going to the beach to stare at guy’s bare chests - women now have Facebook.
While most won’t admit to Facebook creeping, everyone knows they do it, so let’s bust it wide open.
Facebook creeping can be defined as many things. I like to separate it into two categories: passive and active creeping.
Passive Creeping
The most innocent form of creeping, ‘passive’ creepers usually just look at people’s pages, read their profiles and stare at their pictures without ever interacting. I think everyone has been guilty of this at one time or another. For instance, what guy hasn’t been writing a comment on his friend’s picture when he notices an attractive young lass in the photo. So he glances down at the photo tags and notices that she also has a page. And by gosh, she has an OPEN profile.
So he casually clicks on her name and begins looking at her page. First off, he’ll be impressed by her imaginative status, something like Jo is ‘wanting to fall madly in to bed with you.’ Now he’s reading up on her favorite movies and books and funny quotes. And if she just happens to have a photo album of a trip to a tropical climate that involves bikinis, it can’t hurt to take a peek, can it? I thought not. So he looks at all the pictures of her swimming and laughing in her bikini while her skin is glistening in the sea and sun.

By luyen, January 26, 2008 at 15:01I have to say, that i've never gone creeping - i've looked at friends of friends, wondering if I knew them, and yes occasionally i'd be intrigued by the pretty face as you mention in your article...i don't think it's much different from people checking each other in a club or a party, most of the time it's quite one-way in those instances too!
I'm sure a lot of 'scary' voyeurism happens on facebook, i don't know, i have lots of facebook friends (about 60) and i can say in my age group (30s), facebook is not a huge phenomenon, it's there, but personally i'm only in there once a week or so.
I can't speak for everyone else, so i think it's pretty tough to generalize...
Plus i'm married, so yes, occasionally, it's fun to look, but i guess i have my facebook limits!

By senhoritacin, January 25, 2008 at 07:36We are all voyeurs. And we all want to belong to groups. We all want to be popular and have lots of friends.
Facebook just brings all that in us and gives us the chance to do it. Great article!
