The MacDonald boys are back at it, roaming the Internet for fun and profit. This time Scott Macdonald, the younger brother of paper- clip trader auctions off naming rights. The Choose My Name project was started by an American, Cody Baker, a marine, whose bosses told him he couldn't carry on with it. Scott had been following his progress and offered to carry on the task.

The highest bidder so far has offered almost US $37,00 from a online coffee company for Scott to legally name himself Finest Freshest Fastest. If nobody makes a bigger bid by February 2, that's going to be Scott's new name.

Not many people get to be named twice or want to be named twice for that matter. But I guess I am a sort of exceptional case. On February 2nd, 2007 I'll adopt whatever name the public decide I should have and I'll keep it for at least one year.

There many reasons why I'm doing this. I recently completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The school, people and experiences were all great, and well worth the investment. However, the education investment left me sitting in the red financially. I don't really like working your typical office jobs; instead I want to work for myself wherever possible and be an entrepreneur. So I realized I needed to start a profitable project as soon as possible. That's how I ended up with this Web site where I'm auctioning my legal name.

To be honest, the idea is not entirely mine. Sgt. Cody Baker started the <Choose My Name Web site this summer. He did an awesome job of promoting, organizing and posting regular content. Unfortunately he is in the Marine and for being a public employee the U.S. government ordered him to end the auction of his naming rights. Cody and I had been talking after the auctioning ended prematurely and worked out a deal where I'd step in and pick up where he left off.

Financial reasons were not my only motivation, though. For years I've been confused with an American actor who also happens to be named Scott MacDonald. I just turned 24 and I feel I cannot hang on to a name that doesn't represent me as a unique individual. It feels like being name Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks.
